After the fatal first loss in the regional tournament, Jaxon had been approached by several of the college scouts requesting an at-home interview to discuss the options for getting him an athletic scholarship. Jaxon hadn’t quite settled on what he wanted to major in, much less if he wanted to continue playing football. For now, he’d held off on affirming any answer for them, making it a backburner priority. He wanted to make sure he knew what he wanted to do ahead of time.
Over the next few months, Jaxon had a lot that he needed to consider. He wanted to fix his car before prom. Even though he had several offers for dates that night, none of the girls seemed what he wanted. Before, who it was that he went with was not a problem. Since his acceptance of her oath, his mind has been elsewhere. His days of playing the field were dwindling.
He also needed money to fix his car. So he’d started working at a local mom and pop market downtown. Not only did this make it easier on people giving him rides, it also gave him extra time to study in the library when he wasn’t working without worrying over a ride.
It was one cool afternoon when the car was returned from the body shop, Jaxon and his grandfather had been finalizing some minor repairs. They were working on sanding down the newly installed front bumper and priming it for a new coat of paint. His grandfather had stepped inside the house to grab a drink. Jaxon was underneath the car double checking the connections when he caught a glimpse of a dress and bare feet brushing past his.
“I didn’t expect you to come by,” he called out. He gave a smile knowing who it was. Sliding out from under the car, he looked up and Nessa was looking down at him from between her legs. A mischievous grin crossed her face. Jaxon shook his head.
“You know that is not very nice of you to do such an unladylike thing,” he said, teasing back. “What do you think Avi would do?”
She moved aside and leaned against the workbench. Her fingers tracing over the different tools spread out.
“Probably the same thing you would, if I were any other girl out there,” she chuckled.
He shrugged his shoulders with a tilt of his head.
“Maybe,” he replied. “Then again, if he’s my ancestor and you were his lover. That would be like double dipping. That’s not my game.”
She shifted herself and nodded. “I think Avi would be proud of you saying that. Keeping me virtuous, regardless of age.”
“So,” he said, letting that hang in the air for a bit.
There was a moment of awkward silence. He leaned against the car watching her examine the tools.
“One of my new classes I’m in, teaches me about the human body and how it reacts to various things, externally and otherwise.”
She looked up at him. “Yes?”
“It’s. Helpful. Sorta. I still have questions that I don’t know how to ask or if it’s something that can really be answered.”
“Well, what are they boyo? My time is a bit briefer than normal. Something I must tell you, but go on.”
He looked at her concerned, but nodded knowing her time was precious, yet valuable.
“I’ve noticed that some of my previous abilities that seemed to be superpowered, are starting to either level out or diminish. Is that normal?”
She nodded. “Yes, my blood is starting to thin out. It won’t completely go away, there will be an inkling always, until your human death or until I proceed with making you a vampire.:
He gave a disappointed sigh. “Ok. Not really a question, but something I did want to say. If you ever need to feed, it’s okay.”
She gave him an awestruck look before laughing. “I will keep that in mind. Anything else?”
“Oh yeah. When you drink blood, is it like straws in your fangs?
Her brow furrowed and she gave him a quizzical look. She mumbled something in her native tongue that he wasn’t quite sure about. Then, she smacked him across the arm playfully.
“I do not know, exactly. Not something I ever thought about. I just, do it.”
He rubbed his arm from her smack. “I was just curious. Guess I’ll figure it out on my own.”
“In time, boyo. Now, I do have something to say to you, that’s important. I’ve heard that Muriel, Avi’s wife, has found out that there is someone on this side of the world that is part of their bloodline. I can’t tell where she is yet, she’s covered herself well. Yet, the council warned me that she is close to where I’ve been wandering.”
She moved swiftly and got up close to Jaxon. Her hands lingered to his face exploring them, she focused on every aspect of them.
“I want you to be careful, my Jaxy. I want you to be ready when I do create you. I don’t think rushing this would be a wise idea.”
“Yes, of course, Nessa,” he said. “I will be as careful as I can be.”
Nessa placed her head upon Jaxon’s chest and purred. “Yes, it beats just like my Avi’s. You are strong.”
She lifts his hand up to her mouth and pierces it with her fang. She takes but just a drop or two. She then pierces her own finger and puts it up to Jaxon.
“Not to increase yourself, but to help shield you from her, if she is close. You are close to change, but I wish to wait longer.”
He opened his mouth and she squeezed just a tad into his mouth. He closed his mouth as he gingerly swallowed. He opened his eyes looking into her emerald greens.
“Why are you so gentle with me, Nessa?” he questioned.
“You are what I have close to Avi. You will be my childe. I want nothing but the best for you.” she said and stepped back slowly. “I must go.”
She started moving away before Jaxon caught her attention and she looked back at him with a giddiness she’d rarely felt.
“If I could, I’d take you to my prom, as my date,” he said softly. “There’s no one else I really want. They aren't equal to you.”
She smiled at him. “Thank you, Jaxy. You will find the one to fill that emptiness. She’s out here. Patience my boyo.”
He watched her vanish around the corner. He took in a deep breath as he still tasted a bit of her blood lingering in his mouth.
His grandfather came back out with a drink for both of them. Jaxon motioned with his hand that he wasn’t thirsty.
“So Jax,” he said as he grabbed the sander block. “Have you thought about who you are going to take to prom with you?”
Still leaning into the car, he gave a chaste laugh. “Yeah, but I think she’s taken. Oh, well. Probably for the best. She’s too good for me.”
“Ah boy,” said his grandfather. “You’ve got the charm. I’m sure that she’d be lucky to have you.”
Pushing off the side of the car, he went to his knee to go back under.
“Eh, maybe. The guy she’s with is pretty remarkable too, from what I know of him. I’d rather not break up something that’s going good.”
His grandfather raised his brow at him. “This is out of left field. My grandson, becoming, moral. I do declare.”
Jaxon and he continued working on the car the remainder of the day, before it was picked up for the paint job.
When prom arrived, Jaxon held to his word. He didn’t go with anyone. If he couldn’t take Nessa, he wouldn’t take any one. He would have enjoyed seeing her dressing up and participating in things of his era. If Avi was much like himself, he knew that he would want her to have fun, too.
Pulling up into the parking lot of the community hall, the new paint on the Mustang glistened under the bright lights. Several of his friends came over with their date to see the car and how it turned out. He walked along with them as they discussed who all they had seen as they were out cruising around town and the shops before coming here. They had gone out to eat, but Jaxon decided to have supper with his parents instead.
As they walked inside, they stood in line to check in to register and to vote for homecoming king and queen. Jaxon noticed a few people had jotted down his name with another girl who begged him endlessly to be her date. He wrote down who he felt would best represent their senior class.
Proceeding further, he was met by a balloon archway to walk through. The picture area was off to the right as you come in and the snack and drink area to the left. Ahead, Jaxon looked over the crowd and several couples were already dancing on the floor to the house band. He roamed around, stopping at the drink station getting a small cup of fruit punch.
Casually walking around, he would mingle here and there with the different people in his grade and lower grades. There were even a small handful of people that had already graduated in attendance with their dates. While grazing over the crowd, someone caught his attention in a far corner. She had a cup in hand sipping on it intermittently. Her body slowly moved to the beat of each song and she focused on him like a predator to prey.
Jaxon shook his head, thinking better of himself, but wanted to see why she was here.
“Kat,” he said as he came shoulder to shoulder with her, careful how loud he said her name so others wouldn’t hear it. “What are you doing here?”
She continued swaying to the music.
“I couldn’t miss your prom, Jaxon Steele. Now could I. Too bad that I’m unable to be on your arm. I’m sure we could walk away easily with the Prom crowns. Then again, I’m sure I could make your night memorable regardless.”
Jaxon gave a slow sigh at her comment.
“First off, you’re my teacher. That wouldn’t look right.”
“Our kiss though,” she said and licked her lips before taking a drink. “It was electric. Don’t tell me you didn’t feel anything, Jaxon.”
Jaxon chose to ignore her approach. The kiss was amazing, but he definitely didn’t want her to know it.
“Your point, Kat?”
“What are you doing afterwards?” she said forwardly.
“Going home.” he said clearly.
“Oh come now, Jaxon. I’m sure that your parents know that most don’t come back home until late.”
“Since my wreck, they keep tight reins on me, Kat. I almost died.” He looked down at her finally.
From this point of view, he could see the start of her cleavage and the details of her lithe frame. Even if she was older and his teacher, she was certainly good looking. He couldn’t deny it. He shook his head to shake the thoughts of what all he could do to her and possibly what she could teach him.
“Jaxon,” she said, catching him oogling her. “If you like what you see, stop denying yourself the pleasure that you could experience.”
“Kat,” he said exasperated. “It can’t happen. It just can’t.”
“Are you challenging me, Jaxon? It can and it will. You will be mine in the end.”
Jaxon looked into her eyes and saw a fierceness that had him pause. She was not backing down, no matter how much he denied her.
“If I said, yes?” He proceeded with caution.
She turned her upper body towards him. “Challenge accepted. Step outside in 10 minutes. I’ll be waiting by your prize car.”
She stepped away from him, disappearing into the crowd of students on the dance floor. He lost track of where she was. His heart was beating out of his chest.
‘What have I gotten myself into?’ he thought.
He mingled for a few minutes before needing a break from the couple of dances. Stepping outside, he noticed that there wasn’t anyone at the registration desk and the parking lot was empty except the cars. As he strolled to his car, Kat had made herself on the front of the car like a hood ornament ready to be polished.
Her shoulder length blonde hair illuminated under the lights. Her skirt scandalously short and blouse partially unbuttoned taunting him to further examine what’s underneath.
“I’m here,” he said, trying to remain controlled.
“Yes,” she added. “Your challenge?”
“Yeah, that,” he started speaking. She grabbed him by his tuxedo jacket and pulled him down to her. She locked eyes with him before placing her lips on his. Her tongue demanded entrance into his mouth.
Jaxon took his hands out of his pocket to pull back but they found their way to her waist. She pressed herself firmly into him. He felt every part of her womanly curves against his.
He knew what Kat had in mind and was going to complete her task whether he tried to convince her otherwise. She was proving to him that he was hers that night.
Returning to the prom, Jaxon had to adjust his entire outfit. He went into the bathroom to wash his face and hands. Looking in the mirror, her lipstick imprinted itself upon his neck. His chest was flushed. Raking his fingers through his hair to look less disheveled.
When he went to the table where his friends decided to rest, several commented on his new look compared to earlier. He blew them off and let himself be dragged away by several of the girls to dance with them. It halted any further questions on who the lucky girl was. On the dance floor he was surrounded by them.
