Jaxon spent most of the morning in his room. He was considering everything that Nessa and his grandfather had told him. Then, thoughts of Kat and the adventures he’d already been on with her being beyond anything he’d ever imagined. He wasn’t counting their previous date with her associates, figuring it for a fluke. Even though she may be a bit older, he’d never experienced life like he had until she’d introduced her world to him.
Her world was one of fame and fortune, he had anything he ever could want at his fingertips. She may have her oddball requests, but she showed him a side of life he could only have seen in movies. He was at odds with what he was warned about and what he longed for, travelling the world.
That afternoon, Jaxon’s parents hosted his graduation party at their house. He had all his friends, their girlfriends, and a few other classmates for a backyard get together and cook out. One of the guys brought his car around for music on the radio. They played horseshoes and tossed the football around. Overall, Jaxon enjoyed himself, he was able to settle on the idea that his high school years were over and it was time to decide on what he wanted to do going forward.
First, he would be enjoying an extended weekend away with Kat. When he returned, he needed to figure out if he was going to go on to college and if so, which college. A scholarship was still dangling out for him to grasp, but he wasn’t feeling the desire to continue an athletic career. If not college, trade school or some vocational training, yet again, doing what? His grandfather encouraged him to join the military until he could figure out what he wanted to do. Jaxon was uncertain, besides, going to war and fighting didn’t seem like him either. One thing was for certain, he wanted to travel. He knew he could do that, somewhat, in the military. He could also travel abroad for college as well, depending upon his degree. Those options limited his dreams.
When everyone dispersed from the party and headed elsewhere, Jaxon went inside to grab the small bag of his personal toiletries and other items he wished to bring along. Hoping that this weekend would open up more about who Kat was so that he could decide what he wanted to do next. A brief car horn shattered the quiet in the house. He headed downstairs and gave his parents a departing show of affection.
Jaxon nearly skipped out of the house and down the drive to Kat’s sportster. Settling into his seat, she drove off at a healthy speed.
“So,” he said, clambering to find something to talk about. “Where to first?”
His eyes gleamed with excitement. Kat quietly drove along keeping to herself. She seemed deep in thought until he asked his question.
“We are heading to the airport, Jaxon.” Her tone was very matter of fact.
“Okay,” he said. His nerves were jittery with excitement on what she had planned.
“You’ll be going to New York City as plus 1. There’s a, uhm,” she stuttered momentarily. “A special art show near off-off-broadway. We’ll be staying in my Manhattan condo for a couple of days, before we take another flight down to the Keys. I reserved a private island and cabana. I would have taken us to Greece this weekend, but I have yet to get you a passport. That’s next on my agenda.”
She kept facing the road as they took the highway towards the city’s airport. Kat spoke like the weekend vacation was more of a business plan than a vacation and to get away. He shrugged it off to her personality. It seemed the more he socialized with females, the more complicated they became.
The flight was a red-eye to New York City. Jaxon slept the majority of the flight. He woke up to the sun cresting over the rounded horizon bringing the early morning light across his face. He rubbed his eyes watching as the plane hovered above the clouds before descending to JFK airport. From this high up, Jaxon could see the tall buildings, Lady Liberty, and the boats along the shoreline creeping along like ants. The Big Apple was just as he imagined it being and then some.
A taxi was waiting for them when they landed and headed out of the airport. Jaxon hefted his bag into the trunk alongside Kat’s bag. He was a bit worried considering that she had bought all sorts of things for him, but all they had was two carry-on satchels between them.
He pressed his head to the glass trying to see the tops of the buildings disappearing into the sky. He felt a hard tap on his leg and he turned to Kat who was sitting like this was a normal day for her. She motioned for him to relax. He tried to sit back, but shifted in his seat trying to take everything in. It was worse than a kid in a candy store given the option to window browse and maybe buy if they were good.
Arriving at the condo, it wasn’t as tall as some of the other buildings, but it favored some of the more historic buildings he’d seen along the way. A bellhop met them on the sidewalk. Crowds of people were passing them by without even a sidewards glance or a hello. Jaxon was not used to the fast pace and lack of friendliness that he was accustomed to, but had a clearer understanding of Kat’s blunt bravado. The door was opened for them and the driver handed the bellhop their two bags.
“Greetings, Ms. Krzysztof,” said the man.
“Hello, Sergio,” she replied. “Did my luggage arrive?”
“Yes, I handled them myself. They are in your place now.”
“Very good,” she said with a slight smile. “That’s my man.”
She reached in her wallet and handed him a wad of cash. Jaxon watched this in awe when he realized how much she gave him. Sergio moved the luggage cart alongside them. He pressed the button for the elevator. When the elevator opened, he extended his hand out to Kat and Jaxon to enter first. Kat took Jaxon by the hand and moved him in beside her. He could hear a small groan from Kat at his naive politeness. The bellhop entered after them with the cart blocking the doors.
It was a short ride to what seemed like the top floor. They settled into their room, putting their bags on the couch. Kat headed to the kitchen area, found the liquor fridge and took two of the small drinks.
She flopped down onto the chaise lounge and started sipping on them. Jaxon’s attention was drawn from Kat by slowly opening blinds. Kat looked over at him.
“You’ll get used to it,” she commented at his intrigue with everything. “It’ll grow old with time.”
Jaxon looked back at her apologetically. “I’m sorry.”
“What are you to be sorry for?” she said, continuing the remaining first drink.
“That this is all new to me.”
“While it is frustrating, I’m aware of your fascination with everything new around you. I plan on getting you used to most everything that you’ll have access to and be able to enjoy with me. I won’t shelter you like you have been.”
“Shelter me?” He leaned his head to the side not sure why he would be sheltered at any time.
“Have you ever been to a city that had more than one borough that was a part of it. Manhattan, Bronx, you catch my drift. I’m not talking about North and South Main street suburbia.”
Jaxon finally settled on a chair between her and the couch.
“No,” he said. “We never had the money or time to go anywhere out of our county, much less out of state.”
Kat chuckled. “I figured as much. Are you still dreaming of travelling?”
He nodded. “Yes, very much so.”
“Then stop being a tourist. Learn the culture. You seem the studious type. Read about it. Learn the language. Maybe even catch a couple of shows or movies for where you want to go. It will at least give you more insight on your whereabouts. Otherwise, thieves and scam artists will spot you a mile away.”
Jaxon felt less than hopeful about wanting to travel, but would always know it was his dream.
Kat sat up and shook her head. “I suggest showering and resting before tonight. We’ll be going out to eat and then to the art show. Don’t ever gorge yourself, but don’t starve yourself either. Be modest. Your attire for tonight should be in a bag on the back of the bedroom door. It’s going to be a long night in the city that never sleeps, Jaxy.
Kat was up long enough to scour the room to find a light blanket and settled back on the chaise lounge with the second drink. She indulged in that by dismissing Jaxon to the bedroom and bathroom to shower. He took his bag with him, using his own toiletries to clean up. Curious which outfit she had picked out for him, he realized it was slightly different than he first thought. It was a black button up satin shirt and black leather pants. This was not what he anticipated art show viewers would normally wear. Then again, his first impressions of big city life has taught him not to believe everything he imagines.
He had his sleeping pants on and was going to wish her sweet dreams, but she was already in la-la land with the small sample bottle fallen to the floor. Giving a slight shrug of his shoulders, he headed to the bedroom and collapsed into the bed curling into the covers. He made a mental note to himself, hotel beds are much comfier than his own.
