Chapter 4:Edge of darkness

1025 Words
The night stretched on, an oppressive weight pressing down on Alexa’s chest. As the hours passed, she found herself pacing the small, dimly lit room, unable to shake the feeling that every creak of the building or shift in the shadows brought them one step closer to danger. Damien was silent for most of the time, sitting on the cot with his eyes closed, trying to regain some semblance of strength. But Alexa couldn’t afford to sit still—not with the truth just out of reach, not with the threat of the Revenant Order looming over them. She glanced back at Damien, his face pale, his wounds more serious than he let on. He’d been too focused on protecting her to worry about his own injuries, and it gnawed at her that he hadn’t let her help more. “Damien,” she said, her voice soft but firm. He opened his eyes, looking at her with an unreadable expression. “What is it?” “Why didn’t you tell me the full story earlier? What really happened between you and the Revenant Order? I need to understand who we’re up against if we’re going to survive this.” Damien sighed, his gaze flicking to the floor before meeting her eyes again. “I didn’t want you involved in this mess, Alexa. I thought I could protect you from it. But I should’ve known better.” He paused, as though weighing his words carefully. “When I was younger, I got involved with them—Revenant. They promised me power. I was looking for a way out of the life I was living, and they offered me everything. But it came at a cost.” Alexa stepped closer, her heart racing. “What kind of cost?” “Everything. They trained me, shaped me into what I am now—what I was,” he corrected, his voice bitter. “They made me a weapon. But when I tried to leave, to get out, they didn’t let me go. Your father... he saved me from them. He was the one person who didn’t see me as just another tool to use.” “Why did he help you?” Alexa asked, her brow furrowing. “Because he knew I could be more than that. He knew I could fight back. He wanted me to fight back.” Damien's voice softened as he spoke her father’s name. “And when he died, they thought I would return to them. But I couldn’t. Not after everything I had seen. I tried to escape, but they kept hunting me. And now...” His gaze shifted to the far corner of the room, his jaw tight. “Now, they’re after you. And the one thing they want more than anything... it’s what your father kept hidden. The key to everything.” Alexa’s mind spun, trying to connect the pieces of a puzzle she wasn’t sure she was ready to solve. “What does it mean? What’s the key?” Damien hesitated, his eyes narrowing. “It’s not just information, Alexa. It’s power. The kind that can change the world. Your father was protecting it. And now, you’re the only one who can unlock it.” Her stomach churned. “What do you mean, I’m the only one? I don’t know anything about this. I don’t know how to unlock anything!” “You will,” Damien said firmly. “You already have. Your father wouldn’t have trusted you if he didn’t believe you could handle it. You’ve got the strength, even if you don’t see it yet.” Alexa shook her head, disbelief mixing with fear. “This is insane. I’m just some college student. I’m not some secret agent or... whatever you think I am. You’ve got the wrong person.” Damien stood, his expression hardening. “I wish you were just some college student. But you're not. You’re in this now, whether you like it or not. And the longer we wait, the closer they get.” Alexa stood still, the gravity of his words sinking in. She didn’t know what to feel anymore. Anger, confusion, fear—it all seemed to swirl together in a storm that threatened to break her. But one thing was certain: she was in deeper than she had ever imagined. “I don’t even know where to start,” she whispered. “You start by surviving,” Damien said, his tone grim. “We can figure out the rest later. For now, we need to move. We can’t stay here long.” “Where are we going?” “Somewhere safe,” he replied, his voice quiet but determined. “I’ve got a contact who can help us—get us some answers. But we need to hurry.” Before Alexa could protest, the sound of tires skidding to a halt outside sent a chill down her spine. Damien’s hand shot out, grabbing her arm with a strength that felt almost desperate. “They’re here,” he hissed. “We need to go—now.” Without waiting for a response, he pulled her toward the back of the building, through a narrow corridor and out into the rain-soaked night. The cold hit Alexa like a slap, but she barely noticed. Her mind was focused on the urgent need to escape. As they emerged into the alley, Alexa’s heart pounded in her chest. The night felt alive with the sound of pursuit. Footsteps, muffled voices—Revenant had found them. Damien looked at her, his expression one of grim resolve. “We have no choice now. We either outrun them, or we fight.” Alexa’s hands trembled, but she tightened her grip on the gun. She wasn’t about to back down. Not now. Not after everything. As they sprinted through the rain, Alexa couldn’t shake the feeling that she was running toward something—something bigger than her, than Damien, than everything she’d ever known. And no matter how fast they ran, it was only a matter of time before the truth caught up with them. The storm was just beginning.
