Chapter 2: the game begins

The word burned into her mind: TARGET. Alexa’s hands trembled as she clutched the paper, her breath coming in short gasps. "Why? Why am I a target, Damien? What have you dragged me into?" "I didn’t drag you into anything," Damien replied, his voice low and sharp. "This started long before I found you again. You just didn’t know it." "Didn’t know what?" she demanded, her voice rising. The chaos around her—the rain, the firelight, the bodies—felt distant, muted compared to the storm building inside her. Damien ran a hand through his damp hair, his frustration clear. "They think you know something. Something that could bring their whole operation down." "I don’t know anything!" Alexa shouted. "Try telling them that," he shot back. A sudden burst of static crackled through the air, followed by a voice from a nearby radio. "Unit three, report. Have you secured the targets?" Damien’s head snapped toward the sound. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her deeper into the maze of alleys. "We don’t have time for this. They’ll regroup any second." But Alexa dug her heels in, yanking her arm free. "No! I’m done running until you tell me what the hell is going on. Who are these people? Why are they after me?" He stopped, his shoulders rising and falling with each breath. For a moment, he didn’t speak, and she thought he might ignore her demand. But then he turned, his expression colder than she’d ever seen it. "They’re called the Revenant Order," he said finally. "An underground network of killers, mercenaries, and people you don’t want to meet in a dark alley. They’ve been hunting you because of your father." Alexa blinked, her anger faltering. "My father? What does he have to do with this?" Damien hesitated, the conflict in his eyes clear. "Your father was one of them—a high-ranking member. But he betrayed them, disappeared, and left behind something they desperately want." Her stomach twisted. "No. That’s not possible. My father died when I was six. He wasn’t—he wasn’t some criminal!" Damien’s gaze softened, but his tone remained firm. "I don’t know what he left behind or why they think you have it. But trust me, Alexa, they won’t stop until they get it." She shook her head, stepping back. "This is insane. You’re insane. My dad was a professor, Damien, not some underground mobster!" "Believe what you want," he said, his voice hardening again. "But the fact remains—they’re after you. And unless we figure out what they’re looking for, you’re as good as dead." A loud crash interrupted their conversation, followed by the sound of boots pounding against wet pavement. "They’re closing in," Damien said, grabbing her hand again. This time, Alexa didn’t resist. The fear in his eyes was real, and whether she believed his story or not, she couldn’t ignore the danger bearing down on them. As they ran, her mind raced. Could Damien be right? Could her father—a man she barely remembered—have been involved in something so dark and dangerous? And if so, what had he left behind that was worth killing for? They turned a corner and found themselves at the edge of the city’s old industrial district. The buildings loomed like forgotten giants, their broken windows and rusted frames casting eerie shadows in the flickering streetlights. "This way," Damien said, leading her toward a dilapidated warehouse. Alexa hesitated. "What’s in there?" "Safety," he replied, though his tone didn’t inspire much confidence. Reluctantly, she followed him inside. The air was damp and heavy with the scent of oil and decay. Damien closed the door behind them and slid a rusted metal beam across it as a makeshift lock. "We’ll rest here for now," he said, his voice quiet but firm. Alexa sank onto a crate, her body trembling with exhaustion and fear. She looked up at him, her eyes searching his for answers. "If they’re after me, why are you still here? Why risk your life for someone like me?" Damien froze, his back to her. When he finally turned around, there was something in his eyes she hadn’t seen before—something raw and unguarded. "Because I owe your father my life," he said simply. "And because... I’d rather die than lose you again." The silence between them was heavy, charged with emotions neither of them could name. But before Alexa could respond, the sound of metal scraping against the outer wall shattered the moment. "They’ve found us," Damien said grimly, pulling his gun. Alexa’s blood turned to ice as the reality of her situation sank in. There was no running from this. No hiding. All she could do was trust Damien and pray they’d make it through the night alive. The sound of scraping metal grew louder, echoing through the cavernous warehouse. Alexa’s pulse thundered in her ears as Damien moved swiftly, scanning the dimly lit space for any semblance of cover. “They’ll surround us,” he muttered, more to himself than to her. “We need a way out before they get inside.” Alexa pushed herself off the crate, her legs trembling beneath her. “What do we do? We can’t fight them all.” “Exactly,” Damien said, pulling her toward a rusted staircase leading to the upper levels. “We don’t fight. We outsmart them.” As they ascended the creaking steps, Alexa glanced back at the door. Shadows flitted across the cracks, and she could hear voices now, low and menacing. “Block the exits,” a man ordered. “They won’t get far.” Her breath hitched. “Damien, they’re sealing us in!” “Let them,” he said, his tone unnervingly calm. They reached the second floor, a maze of rusted catwalks and old machinery. Damien led her to a corner where a stack of crates provided partial cover. He crouched low, pulling her down beside him. “Stay here,” he said, his voice firm. “What? No!” she hissed. “You can’t just leave me!” “I’ll draw them away,” he said, checking his weapon. “You’ll be safer if they think I’m alone.” “That’s insane!” Alexa grabbed his arm, her grip tight. “You can’t fight them all by yourself. You’ll get killed!” Damien turned to her, his expression softer than she expected. “Trust me, Alexa. I’ve been in worse situations.”
