Chapter 6: Nightingale's Lullaby

732 Words
Rain turned to sleet as I dragged Kai through the tunnel, his blood warm and slick against my hands. He was fading lips pale, breath shallowbut his fingers still gripped mine like an anchor. ‎ ‎“Stay with me,” I whispered, voice raw. “You don’t get to die before I tell you everything.” ‎ ‎He managed a weak smirk. “Bossy… even now.” ‎ ‎The boathouse loomed ahead—a weathered cedar structure perched on Blackwater Cove’s edge, waves crashing violently against the pilings. I kicked open the door, hauled him inside, and laid him on a rusted workbench. ‎ ‎“Safe… is behind the anchor mural,” he rasped. “Password… Nightingale’s Lullaby.” ‎ ‎I found it a steel panel hidden beneath a painting of a ship in a storm. My fingers trembled as I typed the code. ‎ ‎Click. ‎ ‎Inside wasn’t just files. ‎ ‎It was a hard drive labeled “Project Nightingale: Final Protocol.” ‎ ‎And a voice recorder. ‎ ‎I pressed play. ‎ ‎My mother’s voice filled the room calm, chilling: ‎ ‎“If you’re hearing this, Elena, you’ve survived. Good. Now listen carefully. Nightingale wasn’t just about weapons. It was about control. Your father built an AI that can predict human behavior loyalty, betrayal, even love. He called it ‘The Oracle.’ And it’s already inside Voss Industries’ core system. It’s why he knew you’d testify against Kai’s unit. It’s why he let me ‘die.’ He needed you… broken. Obedient.” ‎ ‎I stumbled back. “He’s been watching me this whole time?” ‎ ‎Kai pushed himself up, wincing. “The threats… the bomb… it wasn’t just mercenaries. It was a test. To see if you’d break.” ‎ ‎Suddenly, the boathouse lights flared on. ‎ ‎A figure stood in the doorway silhouetted by the storm. ‎ ‎Not Daniel. ‎Not my mother. ‎ ‎My father. ‎ ‎Silas Voss. ‎Alive. ‎Smiling. ‎ ‎“Hello, darling,” he said, stepping inside, hands clasped like a professor greeting a star pupil. “I see you found my lullaby.” ‎ ‎Kai lunged for his gun but Silas raised a remote. ‎ ‎“Ah-ah,” he tutted. “One press, and the Oracle triggers a kill-switch in every Voss device worldwide. Hospitals. Power grids. Your little security team’s earpieces? All gone.” ‎ ‎He turned to me, eyes cold as glacier ice. “You have a choice, Elena. Come home… or watch the world burn because you chose him over your legacy.” ‎ ‎Kai met my gaze. “Don’t.” ‎ ‎But I saw it in his eyes he knew I might have to say yes. ‎ ‎Silas extended his hand. “The hard drive. And your future.” ‎ ‎Rain lashed the windows. Waves roared like wolves. ‎ ‎And in that moment, I realized the truth: ‎ ‎I wasn’t the weapon. ‎I was the key. ‎ ‎I took a step forward. ‎ ‎Then another. ‎ ‎Kai’s voice cracked. “Elena no.” ‎ ‎I stopped just out of my father’s reach. ‎ ‎“Tell me one thing,” I said softly. “Was any of it real? Did you ever love me?” ‎ ‎For the first time, Silas Voss looked… human. ‎“Love is a flaw, Elena. But you… you were my greatest creation.” ‎ ‎I smiled. ‎ ‎And slammed my elbow into his throat. ‎ ‎As he crumpled, I snatched the remote and tossed it into the churning sea. ‎ ‎“Wrong answer, Father.” ‎ ‎Kai was already moving grabbing the hard drive, shoving me toward the door. “Go! Now!” ‎ ‎But Silas laughed, blood on his teeth. “You think this ends here? The Oracle is already in your phone, your car, your mind. You’ll never be free of me.” ‎ ‎I turned back, rain soaking my hair, the hard drive clutched to my chest. ‎ ‎“Then I’ll burn it all down.” ‎ ‎And as lightning split the sky, I made my choice: ‎ ‎Not heiress. Not pawn. ‎Revolution.
