Younger children, including Oscar, went with the women’s group. Apparently, childcare fell under their realm even when they were working, and the men were sitting around. Again, Leo itched to get up and help, and he hoped he conveyed that feeling with his eyes when he caught Vinnie’s gaze. Vinnie smirked and winked. He understood. The need for both of them to assimilate was more important.
The men remaining around the fire with Leo took up a round of show and tell, pointing to various body parts and objects around them and telling Leo their name. Leo repeated the words, and when they circled around to the beginning, quizzing him, his chin lifted as he got most of them essentially right, although they did have to correct his pronunciation on some.
