Layen shot him a half smile. “Didn’t say I did.” A moment later she was standing, and she whipped the hood of her worn and mud-splattered cloak up over her head as she hunched her shoulders. Then she took a couple of halting, limping steps before she said in a wretched voice, “They just didn’t notice me.” Tiryon had a good laugh. “An’ I bet that dinnae hurt yer bargaining!” She shrugged as she sat back down. “I suppose not. Sometimes it’s easier to be someone else around so many people.” Then she reached for her bag and pulled out her prizes. The most important, of course, was the pair of boots for Hennery. They were much taller than his court shoes, and the fit wasn’t as snug. To go with them, Layen surprised him with a new pair of stockings, far thicker than what he had been wearing.
