Hennery was grateful for the first signs of the sun, even if its early morning hue wasn’t yet strong enough to send shafts of daylight streaming through the dense foliage. But the mere suggestion of light was enough to bring a semblance of cheer to the end of that dark, ominous night. They started out early that morning through the dark trees, once more falling into their traveling formation, senses strained and nerves taut. But it wasn’t until well past noon that Hennery heard something strange, a chorus of low squeaks followed by a faint grunt.
