Frat Party

We decided to have lunch at the school cafeteria and, well… “Is he a jerk all the time?” Lucas asked from where he sat opposite me. Harper huffed. “He is an asshole. I’d have said he suddenly turned into one, but he’s been one since he was a kid.” I took a long sip of my iced tea, catching how Lucas raised a brow. He was fine. Not the loud, showy kind of fine that Jaxon seemed to possess, but the calm kind — the kind that soothed the eyes. Unfortunately, he was into guys. Otherwise, I’d have happily hooked up with him — anything to go against Jaxon. His audacity baffled me. Considering we weren’t friends — definitely weren’t friends — he still thought he had the right to talk to me about boys. I huffed, glancing toward the group of students walking past us. Harper and Lucas’s eyes flicked to me. Harper clasped her hands together. “I heard there’s some sort of frat party tonight,” she said with a smile. “Attending wouldn’t hurt. It’s part of the school’s social activities.” I gave her a flat look. Really? “It’s not part of the school’s social activities, Harps,” I pointed out, and she rolled her eyes. “Well, attending still won’t hurt. Besides, I know you don’t want to spend your evening with Jaxon,” she pressed. I took another sip of tea. She had a point. “How did you even get this invite?” I asked, curious. We’d been here what — one day? — and she was already getting invites to frat parties? She scratched her hair and looked away. I raised a brow and slowly set my cup on the table. “Harper?” She met my eyes, lips thinning. It clicked almost immediately. “Harper.” She shook her head while Lucas watched us, his brown eyes mirroring confusion. “It’s not what you think. It’s just a friendly invite,” she said, and I gave her a dry look. “He’s your RA,” I whispered. Lucas’s brows shot up. “Hooking up with your RA this early?” He sounded amused — and a little impressed, which annoyed me. “Girl, you move fast,” he grinned. Harper returned the grin, and I just stared at the both of them. What? They really didn’t find anything wrong with this? It was all shades of wrong — young or not. “We’re not attending,” I said flatly. Harper frowned. “I am. Like I said, it’s just a friendly invite — and he invited other girls too,” she countered, her expression hardening. She huffed. “It’s just a frat party. There’ll be other students there. It’s not like we’d be alone.” I exhaled and nodded. “Yeah. Do as you wish.” She narrowed her eyes at me before leaning back slightly. “You’re acting like you have a stick shoved up your ass, and it’s not cute.” I blinked at her, stunned into silence. Lucas raised his hands. “You should calm down,” he said, glancing between us. “The both of you.” Harper shook her head, grabbed her bag, and left. Did I do something wrong? I was just… looking out for my friend — the same friend who was quick to fall in love, get her heart broken, and then come crying to me. It might be an innocent invite now, but I know Harper. She… ugh. “You were harsh,” Lucas said with a small shrug. “I was not,” I countered. “You were,” he repeated, and I sighed, pinching my brows. “I’d be pissed too,” he continued. “You’re her friend, not her mum. And you sounded like a strict mum.” I shut my eyes for a second. “I didn’t intend to get her angry. I was just…” I sighed again, staring in the direction she’d gone. “Yeah, well, I get it,” he said softly. “You’re looking out for your friend. But this is college — she’ll want to spread her wings, explore.” His brown eyes met mine, and he gave a soft smile. “You should too. I mean, we all should.” His expression softened, then he straightened up. He was kind of right. He glanced at his watch, grabbed his coffee, and downed it in one gulp before standing. “Um, I’ve got somewhere to be. See you around, yeah?” he asked. I forced a small smile and nodded. His eyes softened. “You should call her. Meet up or something. It’s too early to start a fight.” He smiled wide and walked away, leaving me sitting alone. I watched his back until he disappeared out the exit. Then I finished my tea and left too. When I finally got home, it was a little late since I’d spent extra time in the library — something I didn’t get to enjoy earlier because Jaxon had ruined it. But the library had been pretty cool, filled with so many books that it made me excited. The first real gush of excitement I’d felt since I got here. I wanted to keep that — to explore it. The scene I met when I got home wasn’t pretty. Not at all. There was Jaxon, on the couch, with a brunette — my bet was the same girl I’d seen him with before — and they were making out. And no, they didn’t even acknowledge me. It was ugly. I froze at the door for a second before forcing my legs to move, closing it a bit harder than intended. I scuttled toward my room and locked the door behind me just as I heard her moan. I shut my eyes tight. Could they not do that there? It was a public space, for crying out loud. And worse, I had a feeling I’d be seeing more of this. After all, I was squatting with a boy. I opened my eyes, staring up at the grainy ceiling before pushing off the door and dropping my bag on the bed. I sank into the swiveling chair in the room — which hadn’t been there last night. My guess? Jaxon moved it in. Funny. A sigh escaped me as I tried to ignore the moans that were getting unnecessarily louder. It was just a kiss, for heaven’s sake. I could swear she was overreacting. It was nothing special. After sitting there for a few minutes, I got up, went to the bed, and grabbed my phone. Yeah — I needed to talk to my best friend. I dialed her number. She picked up on the second ring. “Hey,” I mumbled, staring at the plain, boring bedsheet. “Hey,” she muttered back. “I’m sorry about earlier. I didn’t mean to sound that way,” I said. Silence lingered on the other end, so I continued. “I was just looking out for you. But yeah, it’s your life, and you know yourself better. So… are you still going? I can come with you?” At this point, I had to watch my tone. It always came off harsher than I meant. There was a sigh. “I wasn’t gonna attend, but since you’re coming — yeah?” I smiled. “Yeah. It’s not exactly… comfortable in here anyway.” I could feel her perk up. “What did he do?” she asked immediately, and I chuckled. “Well, he’s with a girl right now. They’re making out in the living room — and she’s being unnecessarily loud too.” I scratched my hair. I could still hear them. “That’s awful,” her tone softened. “You good?” “Now, why would you think I’m not?” I countered. Ridiculous. “Because you’ve had a huge crush on that guy and you’ve never seen him with a girl until now — and now they’re sucking each other’s faces.” I bit my bottom lip. “And yeah,” she continued, “you might see it more often. Might even hear them shag. I’m just… concerned if you’re okay.” I sighed. “I’m fine, babe. And I don’t have a crush on him anymore.” I paused, staring at the door. “That was years ago. He can f**k whoever he wants, for all I care.” Lies. The lies we tell ourselves. “Okay,” she said, clearly unconvinced but kind enough to drop it. “When’s the party starting?” I asked. “I was told eight. It’s already seven.” “We can make it.” “Sure. I’ll see you in an hour,” she said brightly. I smiled, even though she couldn’t see me. “See you.” After hanging up, I fell back on the bed, staring at the ceiling. I had no idea what to wear to a frat party — hell, I had no idea what to wear to any party. Worse, I hadn’t even opened most of my boxes yet, so finding a dress would take forever. “f**k, yes!” I scrunched my nose. The moans again. Yeah — I’d better start searching now. I paused when I heard faint grunts and clapping sounds. To say I was disgusted was an understatement. I was mortified. Jaxon… he really had an active s*x life? Oh boy.
