Girlfriend

Skylar “It’s n ot normal, trust me,” I muttered as Harper and I headed for class. Jaxon had left when Harper arrived, and they’d exchanged weird looks. Instead of going back to sleep, I got ready for class. I had business, and Harper had English. We hadn’t talked about what we’d be majoring in next session yet. We’d cross that bridge eventually. For now, we were just focused on passing with good grades. “Maybe he wants to be friends again,” Harper shrugged, meeting my eyes. I rolled mine. “Well, I definitely don’t want to be friends with him again,” I said, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. I meant it. I really didn’t look forward to being friends with Jaxon again. “Hey,” a voice came from behind us. We turned around to see a brunette with huge glasses. I raised a brow. Oh. She smiled at me, then her eyes darted to Harper. “Hi. Are you going to Mr. Darwell’s class?” she asked, pressing her lips together and rocking on her heels—a movement she probably thought was subtle. It wasn’t. Did we make her nervous? Harper glanced at me, confused. “Um, who’s Mr. Darwell?” The girl pushed a strand of hair out of her face. She was cute—and petite. “I could swear I’ve seen you in his English class,” she mumbled before shaking her head. “Maybe I got the wrong person. Sorry.” She turned to leave, but Harper stopped her. “You’re going to an English class… now?” Harper asked. The girl nodded. Harper chuckled, pinching her brows. “I’m headed there too. I just got confused with the name. I don’t exactly know names around here yet,” she explained. The girl nodded, glancing at me again. “Um… can I walk with you both?” she asked quietly. Harper and I exchanged a look before she shrugged. “Yeah. Sure.” The girl smiled softly and joined us. The first few minutes were dominated by awkward silence. I expected it—the social awkwardness that comes with meeting someone new. Harper would ease into it soon enough. Me? It would take a lot longer. “I’m Selena, by the way,” the brunette said. Harper hummed, clearly grateful for the icebreaker. “I’m Harper, and this is my best friend, Skylar,” she said immediately, interlocking our arms and flashing Selena a grin. “Nice to meet you both,” Selena said. I pursed my lips. “Nice to meet you too.” “So, are you a freshman?” Harper asked. They struck up a conversation. I only spoke when I was asked something or when it felt necessary. We split paths when my class came up. “I’ll call you once my class is over,” Harper said. I nodded and waved briefly at Selena. She waved back before I went my way. I was a couple of doors away from my classroom when I ran straight into—Andy. “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t watching where I was going,” I apologized, rubbing my forehead. I’d walked right into him, and he was— solid. “No, my fault. I walked right out of that corner,” he mumbled. I looked up at him. His sandy blond hair was tousled, and his eyes were darker than they’d been that night. His lips quirked up. “So, what are you doing around here?” he asked. I shifted on my feet, glancing at my wristwatch. I was running late. “Well, I—” “Blue.” My eyes snapped up immediately, meeting Jaxon’s green ones. Did he just call me— I narrowed my eyes and took a small step back. What were they doing here? No—what was he doing here? He stepped in front of Andy, staring down at me. Not glaring. Just… looking. Almost soft. I glanced at Andy, then back at Jaxon. “What are you doing here?” I asked. He shrugged one shoulder. “I invited you to watch me play, remember? It’s time.” A smug smile crept onto his face. I frowned. “I told you I wasn’t coming.” He tilted his head. “It’s the first match of the season. I’d be disappointed if you missed it.” Suspicion stirred in my chest. “What’s going on?” I asked. He glanced at Andy. “Hey, man. Give us a minute?” Andy nodded tightly, shooting me a look before walking away. I braced myself. “Look, I just want to make peace between us,” Jaxon said. He gestured between us. “This… feud is getting old. Fast. And it’s childish.” I stared at him, actually concerned. Talk about childish. “Do I need to call your mum? Or take you to a doctor?” I asked calmly. He huffed. “Skylar, I’m just trying to make things right.” “All of a sudden? After ten years? No, you’re not,” I countered, glancing around when I noticed people staring. I lowered my voice. “It’s getting scary. You should stop trying to be nice to me. I like our relationship exactly the way it is—strangers.” I brushed past him before he could respond. A small group of girls stood at the end of the hallway near my classroom. I ignored their stares—until I couldn’t. “They said she’s mad because he was with another girl.” “Yeah… she caught him with someone else.” “I’d be mad too. After keeping their relationship a secret, he goes and f***s another girl.” I blinked as I entered the classroom, quickly settling into a seat at the back. The professor was already there. Wait. There was rumors going around that I was his girlfriend and he cheated on me? Were they serious? What the hell?
