A Bet

Jaxon “You’re both really taking this serious, yeah?” Luke, one of the guys on the hockey team chuckled as we changed into our gear. I glanced at Andy whose jaw was set. “Not actually. I’m not doing anything yet unlike him,” I muttered and Andy’s eyes met mine. “I did nothing,” he defended and I gave him a flat look. “So you were just magically around the place where she’s supposed to have her class? Beats my imagination,” Andy huffed. “You were there too. Doing what?” he bit back and Luke with some of the other guys exchanged looks with annoying smiles on their faces. I straightened up. “Because she lives with me.” “That’s just a stupid excuse. We both know you never wanted her in your house. You never even wanted her around and all of a sudden you’re f*****g interested in her?” he gestured with his hands, his brows drawn together. Luke coughed, staring at me as he made sure his skates were in place. “Well Jax, I thought you said she was like a sister to you,” he grinned and I glared at him. “She’s not my f*****g sister,” I bit out, annoyance simmering beneath my skin. Andy gave a dry chuckle “But, you see her as one. Isn’t it f****d up that you want to be in your ‘sister’s’ pants?” Andy teased and I charged at him but the guys were quick to hold me. “Guys, guys. We’ll be out in less than ten minutes, it would do us absolutely no good to bash our faces in before then, yeah?” Tim, another guy butted in. I glanced at him, a muscle twitching in my jaw. “This is the first match of the season, our opponents are right outside. Now, more than ever we should be united? Well, coach would be disappointed if he sees this,” he continued and I huffed, wringling free of the guys that were holding me. Like I didn’t know. I was his captain anyway. I grabbed my hockey stick and stormed out of the locker room and into the ice rink. Yeah, I needed to clear my head before the game started and seeing Andy’s face just wasn’t it. To think we were both fighting over a girl, after knowing each other for close to three years now. He was giving it all up for a girl and yeah, I feel worst knowing there was a bet in place. I couldn’t back down now, that gave Andy the upper hand and worst still, I wouldn’t let him get to Skylar even if that meant the whole school assuming we were dating. I’ve heard the rumors and even fueled them. He was going to use Skylar to pay me back for breaking his ‘cousin’s’ heart. Yeah, it was all my fault but that doesn’t mean he gets to use Skylar. I know the girl. Although, she pretends to be tough, she isn’t. And that was how the guys made us put a bet. The first guy to… well, have her wins. There would be video evidence and I know it was ridiculous but I just couldn’t let him. I drifted into the middle of the rink where some players of the opposing team were already on. I glanced at the grandstands, a couple of people were already seated and inasmuch as I hated to admit, I searched for her. I’d meant it when I told her I’d love to see her but well, she didn’t overreact. We weren’t friends, she was right. And me trying to suddenly get into her good books was alarming…to her. She didn’t trust me which was for the better anyway. If she found out what was really going on, she’d hate me for life. But I could deal with it…right? “Jax,” someone called and I whipped around quickly. It was coach. I skidded closer to the grandstands that was boarded with woods and glass. Thick glass actually, to protect the spectators. “Where’s the rest of your team? If I’m right, the match is about to start right away,” he asked and I adjusted my helmet. “In the locker room sir. I’ll get them right away and we’ll proceed,” I said and he nodded. “I trust you boys to do good?” he asked and I drew in a breath before nodding. “We’ll try our best, sir,” I gave another curt nod before drifting away as the other team began setting up. I’ve been playing hockey since I was in highschool and I could pretty much count how many times I’ve losed a game. I wasn’t a captain for no reason. If I considered doing something else with my life except taking over the family business, I’d do hockey - full time. I got back into the locker room, where the guys were about heading out. “Okay, listen up.” I called out to get their attention and it worked. My eyes fell to Andy briefly before I looked away. His expression was sour. “This is the first game of the season and whatever outcome we get from today’s game determines what the rest of the season would look like,” I said and rubbed my stick. “I implore everyone of us to try our very best and not let our school down nor ourselves. We got this and we can do it. We’re Greeenville Big Red, always keep it in mind,” The boys nodded and mumbled in between themselves. “I wish us all the best. Out we go!” I moved out of the way as they all filed out, Andy being the last meeting my gaze head on. “Wish you the best, man,” I mumbled but he just brushed past me, I followed suit. There were cheers as we entered the rink, each player moving towards their designated posts. I remained at the middle with the Captain of Boston Eagles. We took our stances as the referee came closer, dropping the puck in between us. I was faster, immediately passing the puck to Tim who was just behind me. I skated closer to the net of the opposing team watching as the puck moved around between my teammates and our opponents. The cheers got louder when one of my teammate got the puck. The dribbling was intense, so was power play. And we were losing the puck real fast as the opposing team scooted towards our net. Andy darted in right just in time to steal the ball, Luke got it from him and soon enough I was shooting it right into the net. Not even the goalkeeper could have stopped that shot. The cheers topped up a notch, as I grinned. I glanced at the grandstands as I changed position. And well, somehow I spotted her. Sitting at the back, with Harper next to her and that…guy speaking to themselves. Well, atleast she was here. I looked away just in time to catch Andy staring too. My jaw tightened as he looked my way as I skated past him. He really was going to make things difficult, wasn’t it?
