Your family wants you back

The cold air inside the holding cell was heavy, almost suffocating. I sat on the hard bench, staring at the dull gray floor. My mind was a whirlwind of emotions—anger, humiliation, and disbelief. The accusation, the slap, and the utter contempt in their eyes kept replaying in my head like a cruel loop. It's been three years since I endured this humiliation. How long can I endure this? No one respects me, not even Elena. Did she love me? I always tried to find out, but her cold behavior didn’t let me think positively. How could she ever love me? My family had pushed me out. When my mother died, my stepmother twisted everything against me, her poisonous lies urging my father to throw me out like I meant nothing. I’m homeless, abandoned by my family, and unable to hold a job because my stepbrother ensures I fail at every turn. Left with no choice, I became Mr. Blackwood’s useless son-in-law, the only way to survive instead of living on the streets. How could she love a failure like me? I laughed bitterly. No one cares about me—no one. I’m nothing but a worthless man. The Blackwood family had always looked at me like I didn’t belong. Tonight, they’d gone a step further and made me feel like a criminal. A loud clanging sound startled me. The cell door creaked open, and an officer stood in the doorway, his face unreadable. “You’re free to go,” he said flatly. I blinked, confused. “What?” “Your bail’s been posted,” he added, his tone curt as he gestured for me to step out. “Bail?” My voice was barely above a whisper as I stood up. “Who bailed me out?” The officer shrugged, uninterested. “You’ll see.” I followed him out, my steps slow and uncertain. The hallway leading out of the station felt endless, every step echoing like a question I didn’t have answers to. Who would bail me out? Elena? No. She wouldn’t defy her family for me. And I had no friends to turn to—no one who cared enough to help. As I stepped outside, the crisp night air hit my face, jolting me back to reality. I squinted against the dim streetlights, trying to find the person who did this favor for me. I started walking, but no one was there. Before I crossed the road, I heard steps behind me. “Young Master,” a voice called softly, carrying a strange urgency. “Your grandmother... she sent for you.” I stopped, my heart skipping a beat. “I don’t care what she wants,” I snapped, looking at the man, my anger still bubbling under the surface. Suddenly, it hit me. “Did you bail me out?” I asked, gritting my teeth. Instead of answering my question, he stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Your family... they’re offering you everything. Everything you’ve ever wanted.” Shock washed over me. A chill ran down my spine. The butler’s eyes locked onto mine. "And the black iron ring; the ring only worn by the heir of the Kingsley family." He took out a black ring that glowed faintly. "Wear it, and you become the sole heir of the Kingsley family. You will inherit all the family's assets, worth 100 billion dollars! Abraham slapped the ring out of his hand, his expression indifferent. "It’s been three years since I married into the Blackwood family, and I have endured endless humiliation. In all this time, when has the Kingsley family ever shown me the slightest bit of concern? She forced me out, and now, she wants me back at her command. Does she think I'm a dog? I just want to be a nobody. I don't care about the 100 billion in wealth." My stomach twisted. What was this about? What kind of choice was I being offered? What were they after? I grabbed the ring from his hand and threw it with all the force I could muster. “Where was she when I was suffering through all of this?” I yelled, my voice shaking with rage and pain. “This was solely mine—my birthright! And now it’s being granted to me like a beggar’s scrap?” I clenched my fists, swallowing the lump rising in my throat. “I don’t need it now. I don’t need any of you. I’ll survive alone now,” I spat, turning away from his stunned face, my heart breaking even as my resolve hardened. My fists clenched and unclenched at my sides, barely containing the storm brewing within me. Every step felt heavier, fueled by the bitter humiliation I’d just endured. The accusations, the beating, the looks of disgust—they all played on a loop in my mind. “Elena…” I muttered under my breath, my jaw tightening. I had to see her. I admit, she was the only one whom I care about now. But I had to ask her why? Why did she let them treat me like that? Why did she stand there, silent, while her family tore me apart? When I reached the Blackwood mansion, the grand gates loomed ahead, tall and menacing. The guards at the entrance straightened as they noticed me approaching. “Let me in,” I demanded, my voice sharp, my anger barely restrained. One of the guards stepped forward, his face impassive. “You’re not allowed inside, Mr. Abraham.” I scoffed. “Not allowed? I’m her husband! Open the gate!” My voice was commanding but the guard’s expression didn’t change. “I’m sorry, sir. Orders from the family. You’re no longer welcome here.” Hearing it, my blood boiled. My hands curled into fists as I stepped closer, glaring at him. “So now I’m nothing, huh? After three years of enduring their insults, I can’t even walk through those gates?!” The guard didn’t flinch, his silence more infuriating than any words he could’ve said. I stood there, staring at the mansion beyond the gates, its golden lights mocking me. For three years, I’d swallowed my pride, endured their taunts, and did everything to be part of this family. And now, I was cast aside like trash. Just as I turned to leave, a sleek black car pulled up beside the gate. The door opened; Sarah stepped out “Sarah?” I said, surprised. She walked closer, her heels clicking against the pavement. Her expression was a mix of relief and concern. “What are you doing here? I thought you’d…” She trailed off, her lips pressing into a thin line. “I’m here to see Elena.” I looked at her, my jaw tightening. “After everything that just happened? Are you sure?” She hesitated, glancing back toward the mansion. My eyes darkened, and I straightened my posture. “I know she must be sad, she didn’t show but she cares about me.” At my voice, she was a little surprised but then nodded and led me to enter. This time guard didn’t stop me. “You go inside, I will be there after fresh.” She said walking towards her room. I nodded and moved toward Elena’s room.
