After I got together with Cain, I would quietly try to get information out of him whenever I could.
Seventeen-year-old Cain had no defenses around me. Like he was showing off, he happily told me about his past and his family.
I would never forget the look of contempt on his face when he talked about why he transferred schools.
"Some factory worker's son actually thought he could compete with me for first place. The night before the competition, I beat him so badly with just one hand that his head was covered in blood. He even wet his pants. He smelled disgusting.
"When his family came to make a scene afterward, my mom gave them some money, and they immediately shut their mouths."
Cain held up his fingers, showing me a number. A proud smile appeared on his face.
"His family probably has never even seen that much money in their entire lives."
I looked at him and asked, "What if he wasn't the son of a factory worker? What if he was someone truly powerful?"
Cain froze for a moment.
After thinking about it, he still stubbornly refused to admit defeat. "That's impossible. Around here, no one is more powerful than my dad."
I looked at him with admiration in my eyes.
Cain's lips curled slightly. "Even if things got taken all the way to the capital, I still have my uncle. My uncle is currently…"
He suddenly stopped.
Cain turned his head and raised his eyebrows at me.
"I almost forgot. He told me not to mention it. When we go to the capital for college, I'll take you to meet him if I get the chance."
"Oh, is that so…"
I looked at him and smiled softly. "Then, I'm really looking forward to it…"
