Chapter 5

“Mayah!  Wake up!”  Mayah rolled over and looked at the clock on the stand next to the bed.  “Go away Krista!” It was too early to deal with whatever crisis she had going on. “Mayah, come on.  Dad said we can go shopping at the mall!” “We? Or you?”  She really didn't care too much for shopping but one of Roach’s rules was that if one went, the other had to go too.   “Mayah, please.  I know you hate shopping but it will be fun.  You can drive…” Krista knew that would convince her to get moving.   Rolling out of bed, she stomped over to the door and swung it open.  “Fine! But you owe me.” she huffed as she headed to her closet. Once she found what she was going to wear she headed to her bathroom.  “Meet me downstairs, I won't be long.” Thirty minutes later, she tiptoed down the steps.  She wanted to make sure she was gone before Roach changed his mind about letting her drive.  He trusted her as a driver but not when it came to street racing.   “Mousy Mayah...heading out?” Mayah froze.  Why was he still here?  Did he stay? Her mind was going a mile a minute.  “Hey Kace, you back home?” “Nah, me and Roach had a long night.  He said I could crash on the couch.” “Cool...well I gotta go.  Me and Krista are going out.  See ya!” She didn't give him a chance to respond as she rushed out the door.  She walked up to her 2012 Honda Civic SI where Krista was waiting impatiently.   “It's about time.  Dad already gave me the lecture about making sure you don't race and stuff.  Blah, blah.” She rolled her eyes sliding in the passenger seat. Glancing back at the door she saw Kace watching her before getting into the driver's seat.  “I hate you right now,” Mayah said putting the car in first gear before peeling out of the parking lot. Once they made it to the mall, Krista drug her sister around to the stores to try and convince her again about throwing a party for when she turns seventeen.   “You turn seventeen in a month!  You have to have a party...what do I need to do to convince you?” “Why won't you drop it?  I don't want a party.” Mayah didn't have the heart to tell her the real reason she didn't want one is because Marco was the last person to throw her one and announced her forced engagement to him. “I finally have a sister to party with and you won't do this for me?”  She pouted. “Are you at least going to buy something?” Before she gave her the chance to answer, she grabbed her sister and pulled her into another store.  “Here, your trying these on,” she ordered handing her a bunch of clothes before taking a seat near the window while Mayah headed into the dressing room. “Krista, this isn't even my style,” she complained walking out with the dress Krista handed her.  “It doesn't have sleeves…”  “You can't hide your body forever, Mayah. Its summer out and your walking around in long sleeves and jeans.”  Krista knew the scars on her body bothered her. Even at home, she always is covered up if someone else is in the room with her.   Mayah turned to head back to the dressing room when she heard someone tap on the glass.  Mayah spun around to flip off the admirer but stopped dead in her tracks. “That's impossible,” she whispered staggering back a step. “What?”  Krista turned to see who had her sister spooked.  “We need to leave.” She pulled Mayah to the register to just pay for everything. “Look at this!  Well if it isn't my bosses fiance and her sister.  What? Not going to say hi?” Jackson walked in the store with three men.   “Your'e supposed to be in jail,” Mayah said almost in a whisper taking another step back. “That's the thing baby, I’m out on good behavior.  I’m a free man,” he smiled and took another step towards the girls. “Good for you, we have to go.”  Krista started to pull Mayah farther into the store.   “What's the rush?  Didn't you girls miss me?” he chuckled taking out a wad of cash.  “Here, let me pay for those. For old times sake.” Jackson raised his hand to a sales person walking towards them.  “Here, this is for anything that they want.” he winked at Mayah as he handed the cash to the sales person. He enjoyed seeing the fear on her face.  “It’s nice to know you haven't forgotten me.” He took another step towards Mayah before hearing a voice from behind him. “If you take one more step, I’ll snap your neck.”   Jackson spun around so he could put a face to the voice.  “Kace, didn't expect to see you at a mall.” His men chuckled. “Mayah, Krista...lets go.”  He had his hand in his pocket, holding his concealed weapon. “We were just having a friendly conversation.  Isn't that right baby?” he winked again at Mayah before blowing her a kiss as she ran past him almost in tears.   “Go out to the car, my car and some of my dads crew are out there.”  he ordered. “What a shame, they left their bags...I can take them to her”  he gave Kace an evil grin as he picked up the shopping bag that laid where Krista sat. “Nah, we got it.”  he motioned for the man behind him to grab the bags.  “Stay away from them. I don't know how the hell you got out of jail but you go near her again, I’ll put a bullet in your head.”  He backed out of the store slowly and walked towards the exit with his guys behind him. Once he made it outside to his car, the sight in front of him infuriated him.  Krista sat on the pavement crying while hugging and rocking a hysterical Mayah back and forth trying to calm her. He kneeled down next to them. “We need to get outta here.  I’ll drive you guys home.” He tossed his keys to the man with the bags from the store before holding his hand out to Mayah. “Hey, look at me...let me drive you guys home.” “She won't say a word.”  Krista pulled Mayah’s keys from her purse.  “This can't happen...not again.” She pulled Mayah to her feet as Kace opened the back door.   “It won't happen again.”  He closed the door once the girls were inside.  “Manny, follow me to the Devil's territory,” he instructed as he slid into Mayah’s car.  He looked in the rear view mirror and saw both girls distraught holding each other.   The car ride back to take the girls home was deafeningly quiet.  Once he parked the car he shut it off and turned around. He was at a loss for words.  He didn't know how to comfort them. How to comfort her. Deciding not to say anything, he got out of the vehicle to talk to Roach who was already outside sitting on his Motorcycle talking with Adriano. “I warned you this would happen!  I told you not to let them go out alone!”  Adriano was livid. Roach swung his leg from over the motorcycle.  “Why the hell didn't you call me?” He said to Kace stomping towards Maya’s car.  “Did he hurt them?” “No, I got there in time.  I didn't call you because I didn't have time.  I was going in to collect for Pops when I saw him.  They’re in bad shape.” He glanced at Adriano. “She’s in bad shape.”  He didn't have to elaborate. “How the hell is he out walking around?”   “f*****g good behavior.” Spat Adriano.  He slowed his strides down to hang back with Kace.  “What did he say to her?”   “I don't know.  By the time I got there, he already freaked them out but she won't say a word.” Adriano let out a frustrated sigh and joined Roach at the car.    They patiently waited as Roach tried to coach them out of the car with no success.  Krista was responsive but had decided she wasn't getting out of the car without Mayah. “Roach, let me give it a try.”  Adriano put his hand on his shoulder.  Roach stepped aside allowing Adriano to slide in the backseat.  “Princess?” He took her hand in his. “Princess, I can't begin to imagine what your feeling but I need you to look at me.”  His voice sounded desperate. When she still did not respond, he reached out and pulled her into a hug. She nuzzled her face in his chest and began to sob uncontrollably.  “I’m going to carry you inside. Okay?” He didn't wait for her to respond as he exited her car carrying her in his arms. He made eye contact with Roach and Kace as he walked through the door.  “Roach?” he called back as he made it through the door. “Where am I putting her?”  “Upstairs, follow me.”  Roach led Krista up the stairs with Adriano close behind followed by Kace.  Roach opened Krista’s door and pointed at the next door over. “That’s Mayah’s room.”   “Wait, dad”  Krista sobbed.  “Can I sleep in Maya’s room?  Or can she sleep in mine?” she sobbed.   Roach nodded as he followed her into Mayah’s room.  He stood silently as he watched her climb under the covers with her sister.  He leaned over and kissed each girl on the head and motioned for everyone to follow him out. “I’ll be back to check on you both… I’ll be back, Princess.” Adriano whispered.     The men filed out of Mayah’s room and down the steps towards Roach’s office but never made it.  They stopped in the kitchen where Stitch, Doc and other members of the Devils Angels were waiting.   Stitch was the first to break the silence in the room.  “How are they?” “How do you think?  They’re freakin out.” Kace responded leaning in the doorway. “Kace!”  Roach shot him a look warning him to watch his mouth.  He wasn't a Devil anymore which meant his smart remarks won't be tolerated...no matter if he was a member in the past or not.  “Roach, last time we spoke about this...it didn't end well.  I didn't mean any disrespect then and I sure as hell don't now...its not safe for them anymore.  This is no coincidence that Jackson shows up right before Marco’s court date fresh out of jail.” He took a brief look around the room at Roach’s men before continuing.  “They were finally happy. Mayah was finally happy and now she won't speak. If you insist on allowing them out, whether you request it or not, me and my men will be anywhere they are.”   Roach nodded his head at Adriano.  He felt guilty for not listening to him when he came to warn him.  “They won't be going out anytime soon. If they decide to go to work, they won't leave here alone.”  “Roach man...Permission to speak?”  Kace looked at his old boss who nodded in approval.  “I don't know how he got out with what the feds had against him.”  He closed his eyes to clear the image of Mayah’s fear stricken face from his mind.  “You guys didn't see the looks on their faces...the fear in their eyes. He’s up to something, so just know this...I’m not asking anyone's permission to take this prick out but if I see him again…”  He didn't finish his sentence. His frustration was evident in his tone. “If anyone sees him on our turf, the order will be to kill him.” With Roach in agreement with Kace’s intentions he cleared his throat.  “Have your old man give me a call… we can set up a meeting. Adriano, if you would like to join you are more than welcome.”  Roach was willing to make any arrangements necessary to encourage the safety of his girls. He dismissed everyone from his club telling them they could come back tomorrow to discuss the new protection they were going to put in place but no one budged.  Out of respect and worry, the men decided to spend the night, laying anywhere they could find a place throughout the house. Roach said his goodbyes to Kace and Adriano before climbing the stairs to Mayah’s room. He peeked his head in to see both girls huddled together with Krista hugging Mayah asif to protect her in her sleep.  He kicked his shoes off and silently walked over to the chair in the room. Taking a seat across from where they slept, he took his gun from his waistband and sat it on his lap. Protection detail starts now.
