Chapter 7

2063 Words
Almost two weeks had passed since Mayah and Krista decided not to testify against Marco.  The judge dismissed the case without prejudice, letting Marco walk out of court a free man unless the district attorney chooses to file charges against him again.  Since then, Mayah had become reckless.   “I told you to stay away from street racing!  You two were supposed to come straight home after work!”  Roach yelled. One of the local sheriffs called Roach as a courtesy to let him know that he spotted her car racing another vehicle in town but took off from him.  “Dad, it's not like we were by ourselves!” Krista shot back at her father.  She knew her dad was agitated with Mayah’s change in behavior but she liked this new Mayah. “Krista!”  he snapped.  “And Mayah! What were you thinking?” he scolded as they sat on the couch.  He waited for her to answer. This kind of behavior was unusual for her. He expected Krista to be the rebellious teenager, not Mayah.     “They only wanted to let off some steam.  My crew was with her the whole time.” Kace offered with a smile.  “Besides, it's not like anyone can catch her. You've seen her drive man, she’s good.” “Do you think this is a game?” Adriano stood up.  He had been silent while Roach lectured the girls but Kace’s response struck a nerve.  Kace laughed at Adriano’s outburst. “You think its funny?” He rushed towards Kace but Mayah grabbed his arm. “Adriano.  Don't...its not his fault.  I was the one who drove there.  He followed me to the meet.”   “Princess, that's where you're wrong.  He could’ve-no he should’ve called the moment you and your sister drove the wrong way from home!”  Adriano put his hands on Mayah’s shoulders, turning her to face him. “Princess...do you understand how dangerous your behavior is?”  Mayah’s tried lower her head to avoid looking him in the eyes. “Mayah.” he cupped her chin forcing her to look at him. When she still didn't respond, he shot Roach a worried glance releasing her. “Since you girls won't listen and cant seem to follow the rules, you both are quitting your job.”   “Daddy, are you serious?”  Krista whined.   “Shut up!” he roared making both girls flinch.  “Tomorrow’s your last day. You both are quitting”  He shot Krista a look daring her to question him. “I warned you what would happen if you didn't listen.”   Kace’s grin disappeared from his face.   “But dad..” Krista pleaded. “No.  No buts...and Kace... if they are one minute late tomorrow getting home after they get off work, you and whoever you choose to escort them will have me to deal with.  Go to your rooms.” he instructed. He watched as the girls silently followed his orders. “Roach...they are just acting out.  Mayah was just having harmless fun.”  Kace knew with Marco now out of jail, everyone was on edge.  He walked past Roach heading to the door. Without warning Roach grabbed him by the back of his shirt slamming him against the wall. “I dare you to say one more word.” he dared him as he gripped his throat.  “Get out.” Releasing his grip he backed away watching Kace scramble to his feet and stumble towards the door catching his breath. Adriano normally would take pleasure in watching Kace getting beat since he doesn't like him but was too worried to care under the circumstances.  He had spent almost every day tracking Marco and Jackson down with no luck. He knew that they were not the type of men to just move on and let Krista and Mayah live their lives uninterrupted, and by Mayah’s recent behavior, so did she.  She had become distant and more rebellious. He was so lost in his thoughts, he didn't notice Roach hand him a glass of whiskey until he cleared his throat. Snapping out of his gaze, he shook his head. “No thanks man. I’m going to get going.”  He had no intentions of sitting around while Mayah was self destructing. I need my princess back was all he could think as he walked out the door. The next day, Mayah and Krista sat in the office with Jason telling them that their dad is making them quit.  “Are you sure he won't change his mind?” He didn't really care if they quit but having them around for some reason kept Kace at bay for some reason.   “No, today’s our last day.”  Krista huffed. “He at least should have given me more notice.”  He looked at the clock and leaned back in his chair.  “Since today’s your last day, how about you guys come over after work?  My cousin is visiting and he’s having a party...more like a small get together.” Mayah saw Krista’s face light up at Jason's offer.  “We can't. Dad almost killed me because we went to a car meet last night.  He will definitely kill us if we don't go home.” Mayah said glaring at her sister.   “Mayah, come on.  Dad is just being over protective.  He has to do a drop over to...um..he has to work late anyway,”  she forgot that not everyone knows her dad and his club do some illegal dealings on the side “Kris...he was really mad last night.”  “Its okay, he’ll be fine.  We’ll be there.” she said ignoring her sister.   “Great, I’m closing early.  Let's get going.” he said not wanting to wait around for Kace to come by to pick up his payment.  He pulled his phone out to send Kace a message telling him to head over to his house to collect the last fee to pay off his debt.  “I can drive if you want and bring you back later to get your car,” he offered. “No, we’re good.  I guess we’ll follow you” she said following him out the door.   She and Krista followed Jason to his house where it appeared the party was already in full swing.  Parking her car behind his, she shut the car off and turned towards Krista. “This is a bad idea. We should just go home.”   “Officially we don't get off work for two more hours.  We will be home in time. I already sent Kace a text that we came here.  He’s cool, he won't care.” she said getting out of the car leaving Mayah to follow.   The girls followed Jason inside.  It was crowded. The smell of alcohol, sweat and weed hung in the air.  “Here, have a drink...have fun. Enjoy yourselves..I’m going to go look for my cousin.”  he shouted over the loud music. Krista grabbed a red plastic cup with beer in it and handed another to her sister.  “Here. drink,” she said before gulping down her cup. “No thanks, I’m good.”  she said handing her the cup back.  She didn't like beer. “Here. here’s some jungle juice.  At least try it.” she handed her a new cup that someone handed her.  “It's really good.” Mayah brought the cup to her lips to taste it.  “It tastes like juice!” she took another sip before following Krista to the living room. “That's why its called jungle juice!”  she laughed pulling her sister along. The two spent most of the night mingling with the guests in Jason's house, occasionally getting refills on their drinks.  It wasn't long after that they were drunkenly dancing the night away.  “Krista, what time are we leaving?  I can't drive like this. I’ve never heard of fruit punch getting someone drunk before.”  she giggled slurring her words. “It's not fruit punch, its jungle juice.” she corrected laughing. “Juice, punch..same stuff.” “Its alcohol Mayah.  Jungle juice is juice and alcohol mixed.  That's why it tastes like punch.” She knew she tricked Mayah into drinking but if she hadn't, Mayah would have bugged her the whole time to go home. “Krista!” she shouted with a giggle.   “Hey, girls!  Enjoying the party?”  Jason came up behind throwing his arms over both their shoulders.   “Did you find your cousin?” Mayah asked with a grin. “Are you drunk?”  he immediately removed his arm.  “Jesus, I said have a drink, not get drunk!”  He didn't mind them drinking but didn't want to be on the hook if they left his house driving drunk and crashed. “Its okay, I only drank juice...its from the jungle,” she said before erupting in laughter.   Jason couldn't help but laugh as he walked Mayah over to the couch.  He checked the time on his phone. Kace would be arriving soon. “Hey, sit here and don't move.  I’m going to have someone bring you guys some water.” He got up and went to talk to a man standing in the far corner of the room before heading upstairs.   After watching Jason leave the room, Krista stood up.  “I’m going to dance. Stay here and don't move. Don't drink anymore juice,” she giggled as she left Mayah  on the couch.   “But I’m thirsty and I have to go to the bathroom!” she called after her.  She pouted. She stood up on her wobbly legs and stumbled to the bathroom. Once she was done her business, she exited the bathroom to try and find her way back to the couch. “You lost?” said a voice from behind her.  “Jason said for you to drink some water.” He handed her a cup of clear liquid. “Thanks,” she said grabbing the cup.   “Here, let me help you.”  he held her by the arm and took her down the hall away from the party. “Where are we going?  I need to find my sister.  We have to go home.” she said as he lead her away from the crowd. “We’re going to look for her...drink your water.” he said with a grin.  He watched her take a gulp from the cup and start coughing. “What kind of water is that?  It burns!” she shouted. The man laughed.  It wasn't water that he gave her, it was vodka.  “Come on, we’re almost there” he said shoving her through a door. “That's not funny,  what was in the cup?” she whined.  “Hey, Krista’s not in here.” She pulled away from him, struggling to keep her balance. “Here, drink some more” he said ignoring her as he grabbed her arm pulling her back to him.  He Sat her down and forced the rest of the clear liquid down her throat. “That's a good girl,” he whispered laying her back on the couch.  Mayah struggled to push him off but her head was throbbing, she felt as if the world was spinning and she was sinking into the couch. “Here, let me help you with your shoes.”  He said with a sinister voice. After pulling her shoes off, he ripped her shirt open and unbuttoned her pants. Seeing her fighting to keep her eyes open, he stroked her cheek.  “Just go to sleep, I promise it will be over when you wake up.” he snickered pulling his shirt over his head and unbuckling his pants. Mayah fought to stay awake not wanting to lose consciousness.  This is what I get for not listening she thought before slipping away into darkness.
