CHAPTER5

The Yang mansion was an ancient one. It had four courtyards. Each courtyard was given a name and built according to the taste of it’s owner. Adeline King sat in the pavilion not far from one of the courtyards as she watched the workers from afar who took their jobs seriously. She sighed as she looked at the company papers before her. The Yang corporation’s stock over the years depreciated a lot. Notwithstanding, she must commend the efforts of the Manager who tried to keep the company afloat despite having no assurance of success. “what time is the ball tonight?” she asked her assistant beside her. “8pm, Miss King”, assistant Yang replied. Adeline hummed in response as she continued her task at her. Hours past and time flew by and finally, she heard some voices. She looked up and saw Beatrice King and a few unwanted guests. “Momma”, Adeline called out as she ran towards her mother who embraced her tightly. “Yang, have you been feeding your young Miss properly?”, Mrs. Beatrice asked assistant Yang who smiled in response. “Miss King eats her meal properly and never skips a meal”, assistant Yang replied causing her to also smile. Mrs. Beatrice held her daughter’s hands who in turn led her to the pavilion. “Yang, entertain our unwanted guests”, Adeline commanded assistant Yang as she left with her mother. The unwanted guests referred to were her dad, Timor King and sister, Madeleine. “Momma”, Adeline said hugging her mother coquettishly. “have you met him?” Mrs. Beatrice asked Adeline who blushed. “I have momma and he is so good-looking”, She replied. However she couldn’t indulge in her daughter anymore. “the Luo’s are not normal and therefore, you must be careful. Tonight is your night. You must make new allies tonight for yourself and the Yang. Remember you are now the matriarch of the Yang family. Also I’m sorry, you were drawn into this”, Beatrice King said. Adeline smiled looking at her mother whom she knew to be weak but was quite decisive when needed. Oftentimes, she wondered why her mother married her father but after coming to the Yang family, she finally understood why. The wealth of the Yang family couldn’t guarantee the lives of its descendants and the entire mansion was shrouded in gloominess and loneliness. She smiled gently looking at her mother who smiled back. “Miss King” , Assistant Yang called her “your stylist and makeup artist are here” she said leading both mother and daughter away. The Yang mansion lit beautifully in the night. Several cars were parked in front of the mansion and guests gradually stepped into the mansion. Indistinct chattering could be heard. “Is it true that the new matriarch of the Yang family will be revealed?” Mrs. Jones whispered to her husband who moved away from his wife. He frowned looking at his wife who lacked social etiquette. This was the Yang mansion and eyes and ears were everywhere. It was not a place for such discussions. “hush. Not here”, Mr. Jones said to his wife. Mrs. Jones frowned and looked up where she saw Madeleine and Timor King. Madeleine seems to be upset at something and was being consoled by her father. Quite amazed, Mrs. Jones gazed at her face intently. “wow.. so beautiful” Mrs. Jones commented but frowned suddenly because Madeleine looked extremely familiar to her. “darling, look at her”, Mrs. Jones shook her husband, “doesn’t she look like a Yang but she looked unfamiliar at the same time”. Mr. Jones gazed at Madeleine’s appearance and realized his wife was right for once. “she does look like a Yang but also a distant Yang”. “now darling, it’s showtime. You should smile”, Mr. Timor said to his daughter, Madeleine who pouted. “father, how can I be happy? Adeline is the matriarch of the Yang family and she was chosen solely because she looked more like the Yang”, Madeleine grimaced as she complained to her father. “Hush, don’t be foolish. You chose this path. I warned you to stay away from Aiden Smith but you refused saying you were smitten by him. If you had taken my advise, the one becoming the matriarch of the Yang family should have been you”, Timor king said sternly to his favorite daughter. “now listen, look for a man tonight who will replace your reputation in Belkesia”, he concluded. Madeleine sulked once more but she nonetheless held her father’s arms as they walked down the aisle. She could hear murmurs of astonishment and gasps from the guests. Tonight, Madeleine King wore a fish tale mermaid gown. There was a slit from the hem of her gown to her thighs. Her makeup was pale making her face paler and her lips were pink as usual. Her natural long hair flowing to her shoulders was adorned with different hair accessories. “may I?” a young man walked up to her and held her hands. Madeleine held his outstretched hands and walked to the dance floor. “Leo Luo”, he said. “Madeleine”, she replied. These two were not supposed to have met tonight since their story was meant to be a tragedy because only one Yang could marry at once into the Luo family. In an unseen area in the Yang ballroom sat Ethan Luo. “tsk tsk tsk, it seems Leo has found his love”, Liam Luo teased his eldest cousin who ignored him. “does he know the Luos only accept one yang every generation?”, Liam Luo continued teasing. Nevertheless, Ethan Luo ignored him. Nobody knew what he was thinking as his face was shrouded in darkness. Yet, his eyes were focused on the entrance from which Adeline would come out. Liam Luo laughed when he noticed his cousin’s eyesight and laughed. “bro, here comes your bride” Liam Luo teased when the ballroom suddenly became dim. Soft violin music played in the ballroom gaining everyone’s attention and they all looked at the entrance and they saw Beatrice King holding her daughter’s arms walking down the stairs. Gasps of astonishment could be heard from the crowd and more especially when Ethan Luo walked towards the smiling Adeline King and stood beside her smiling.
