Lexi stared silently at the ceiling as she lay in bed, phone to her ear, waiting for the person at the other end to speak as she held her breath. "Hello, dear." The soft, hesitant voice of a woman came through the receiver, and Lexi finally let go of her breath, suddenly unnerved, a situation that had happened one too many times every time she spoke to her mum.
