Waking from an uncomfortable sleep was something Joel never got familiarized with. The return of feeling to his numbed body was like a thousand stakes nudging him beneath his skin. His eyelid was crusted and immense. Even his bones had turned against him, jabbing him when he went to sit or lie down. The screeching of the bats greyed in his nerve and the sunlight on the niche of the cave smarted his eyes. But that was bad about it. He seized a tentative sniff. The smell of the fresh frigid morning air, the calming dewy smell of morning makes him smile. He then cracks his jaws and stretches his arms. “So you're awake, sleeping beauty's awake at last,” she said, fighting the urged to sleep back on the makeshift bed, but she knew they need to keep moving and find some answer to their ordeals
