~ (Iris POV) ~
I stood by the window in my room, holding a warm cup of tea in my hands. From here, I could see the whole pack. Some wolves were training in the yard, others were walking around doing their work. Everything looked peaceful.
I took a small sip of the tea and frowned.
“This tea tastes different today. It’s a little bitter,” I said, looking at the cup.
Elara, my maid, was fixing the bed behind me. She smiled when she heard me.
“I added something new, my lady,” she said. “It’s a little herb my mother used when she wanted to help people sleep better. I thought it would help you feel more relaxed.”
“Oh... okay,” I said softly. I trusted Elara. She had been with me since I became Luna. She had always been kind to me.
But the taste of the tea still didn’t feel right.
I turned to look out the window again. That’s when I saw him Alexander, my mate, my Alpha. He was walking in the courtyard. His back was straight, his steps strong. He looked like the perfect leader.
He didn’t look up at me.
Walking next to him was Alicia, my stepsister. Her long hair bounced as she laughed and walked beside him. She was too close to him. Her hand brushed his arm like she was the Luna, not me.
My heart hurt, but I stayed quiet.
“Elara,” I asked in a low voice, “do you think Alexander still loves me?”
Elara paused, then walked to stand beside me.
“Of course, my lady. He is your mate. He may be busy with the pack, but he chose you. Don’t forget that.”
I nodded, but deep inside, I didn’t believe her. Alexander had been cold lately. Distant. And Alicia… she always found a way to stay near him.
I took another sip of the tea. The taste was still strange, but I didn’t say anything.
Outside, Alicia laughed again.
Something in my chest tightened.
And in that quiet moment, I felt it
Something was wrong.
I placed the half empty teacup on the table beside me and sat down on the soft chair near the window. My hands rested on my stomach.
It had been almost two years since I became Luna… but I still wasn’t pregnant.
The other Lunas in the nearby packs already had pups. Some even had two. I had none. And though no one said it out loud, I saw the looks. The whispers. The disappointment.
Alexander never talked about it. But I could feel the pressure in his silence. Like he was waiting. Hoping. Wondering why the Moon Goddess had not blessed us.
I sometimes asked myself the same question.
“Elara,” I said quietly, “do you think something’s wrong with me?”
She stopped folding the blanket and looked up. Her eyes were soft, but I couldn’t read them.
“No, my lady,” she said. “Some things take time. The Moon Goddess has her plans.”
I nodded slowly, even though my heart didn’t believe it.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” I said.
Lissette, another maid, walked in. Her eyes were wide, and she looked nervous. She held a folded piece of cloth in her hands.
“My lady,” she said with a quick bow. “I… I have something to tell you.”
I stood up slowly, confused. “What is it?”
She opened her mouth, then closed it again. Her hands were shaking.
“I I saw something… last night,” she said. “It’s about you.”
“About me?” I frowned. “What do you mean?”
She took a deep breath and then said the words that would break my life apart:
“I saw you… with another man. In your room. Late at night.”
I stared at her in shock.
“What?” I whispered.
“It’s true,” she said quickly. “I saw you with a man named Dorian. I didn’t want to say anything, but I thought the Alpha should know.”
My body felt cold all over. My heart started beating fast.
“That’s a lie,” I said. “That never happened! I don’t even know any Dorian!”
Lissette didn’t look away. “I swear it, my lady. I saw it with my own eyes.”
“Elara?” I turned to my maid, hoping she would speak up for me.
But Elara lowered her head. “I… I’m sorry, my lady. I don’t know anything. I wasn’t there.”
Tears filled my eyes. I didn’t understand what was happening. Why would Lissette say something so cruel? Why would Elara stay silent?
Outside, I heard footsteps.
Moments later, the door burst open.
Alexander stood there, his eyes dark and angry.
“Iris,” he said coldly. “You’re coming with me.”
My heart sank as Alpha Alexander walked into the room. He didn’t look like my mate. His eyes were cold, full of anger.
“Alexander, please ” I tried to speak, but he raised his hand.
“Guards,” he said sharply.
Two guards grabbed my arms. I looked around in shock. “Wait! I haven’t done anything! Elara, please, tell him!”
But Elara stood quietly behind me, eyes on the floor. She said nothing.
“Take her to the courtroom,” Alexander ordered.
The guards dragged me through the halls. Pack members stopped and stared. Some whispered. Others looked away. No one spoke up.
Inside the courtroom, the elders were seated. Alicia stood beside Alexander, her hands folded, eyes calm. Too calm.
I was pushed to the center of the room. I looked up and saw Aiden, my stepbrother. His face looked tense, worried.
Elder Marlo stood. “Iris, you are accused of being unfaithful to your mate, Alpha Alexander. You are said to have been with a man named Dorian. Do you deny this?”
“Yes!” I cried. “That’s not true. I don’t even know him.”
Lissette, a maid, stepped forward. “I saw her,” she said. “I saw Luna Iris with Dorian in her bedroom.”
“No!” I shouted. “That’s a lie!”
Another elder brought a letter forward. “We found this in your desk. It’s a letter to Dorian. It’s signed with your name.”
Alexander held the letter and stared at me. “Why would this be hidden if you had nothing to hide?”
“I didn’t write that,” I said. “I swear someone is setting me up!”
Then Elder Marlo added, “The guards found Dorian’s body at his home. He’s dead. Poisoned.”
My mouth opened, but no words came. I was too shocked.
“I don’t know what’s going on,” I whispered.
Alexander looked away. “You’ve broken the pack’s laws. And my trust. The punishment is death.”
“No!” Aiden stepped forward, finally speaking. “You’re making a mistake, Alexander. Iris would never do this.”
“This doesn’t feel right,” Aiden said, facing the elders. “We need more proof. Iris is innocent!”
But Elder Marlo shook his head. “The evidence is strong. A witness, a letter, and the man is dead.”
Alexander's voice was final. “She will drink the Blood Blossom.”
A silver cup was brought forward, filled with red liquid the deadly poison.
My knees shook. I looked around, hoping someone would stop this. Aiden’s hands were clenched in fists. His jaw tight. But even he couldn’t stop it.
I held the cup. I looked at Elara one last time. She still wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“I didn’t do this,” I whispered.
Then I drank.
The liquid was sweet for a second, then it burned like fire.
Pain spread through my chest.
The room began to blur.
I fell to the floor.
And then… darkness.
