Chapter 1

399 Words
When I finally came to my senses, I was lying in a hospital bed, wrapped up like a mummy. The doctor told me I had multiple abrasions, but thankfully, nothing was broken. My parents were beside themselves, their eyes red and puffy from crying. "That Julian is absolutely outrageous. How could he just run away like that?" My dad fumed. "He has zero sense of responsibility." "We ended up causing all this trouble for our Claire for no reason," my mom sobbed. "Luckily, nothing serious happened. If it had, we wouldn't have let him off the hook." I stared up, confused, at the snow-white ceiling. 'Julian? Who is that?' Before I could wrap my head around it, more people filed into the room: our family friends, Uncle George and Aunt Lynn. When Aunt Lynn saw me, tears began streaming down her face immediately. "Claire, I'm so sorry," she wailed. "It's all because I didn't raise my son right. I never should have let Julian act so recklessly that he'd walk out on your wedding." Uncle George reached over and grabbed my hand. "Claire, don't you worry. When I get back, I'm going to deal with Julian and make sure he makes this right for you." Julian. It was that name again. Everyone kept insisting that Julian was the reason I was lying here, broken and beaten. But who the hell was he? Why was there absolutely nothing in my head when I heard his name? Seeing me sitting there in a daze, my parents started to panic. They kept hovering, asking if I was in pain, if I was hungry, or if I felt uncomfortable anywhere. Watching them, Aunt Lynn and the others started cursing Julian all over again. I finally looked at Aunt Lynn, who was mid-rant, and cut in. "Aunt Lynn, this Julian you keep talking about… who exactly is he?" The room went dead silent. Everyone looked completely shocked, and my mom was so terrified she scrambled to call the doctor back in for an emergency brain scan. The final diagnosis was simple: I had temporary amnesia caused by a head injury from the car accident. I just blinked, processing the news. Amnesia? If I really had amnesia, why could I remember everyone else perfectly fine? Why was he the only one erased from my mind? I think I know why. He probably just doesn't matter.
