The Council's Secret

738 Words
The entire territory fell silent. "The White Fang Council..." The Shadow Beast's words echoed through the night like a death sentence. Evelyn stood frozen. The giant creature remained kneeling before her, trembling beneath the strange power flowing through her veins. No one moved. No one spoke. Because everyone understood the terrifying truth. The White Fang Council wasn't just another pack. They were the highest authority in the werewolf world. Kings answered to them. Alphas obeyed them. Entire packs could be erased by a single command from the Council. And they wanted Evelyn dead. Damon's face had become dangerously pale. "That's impossible," he growled. The Shadow Beast slowly raised its head. Its glowing red eyes focused on Evelyn. "The Council fears... the return of the First Wolf." The creature's voice sounded weaker now. Almost broken. Lucien stepped closer immediately. "Who ordered this attack?" The beast growled painfully. "The High Elder..." The Moon Priestess gasped. Several warriors stepped backward in shock. Even Kael stopped smiling. The High Elder. The most powerful member of the White Fang Council. A man believed to be over two hundred years old. A man who had ruled the werewolf world from the shadows for generations. Evelyn's heart pounded. Why would someone so powerful be afraid of her? Suddenly, the mark on her arm burned again. Images flooded her mind. A massive throne room. Silver banners. A man with cold blue eyes standing over two bodies. Her parents. Dead. Evelyn staggered backward. "No..." The vision disappeared instantly. But the horror remained. Tears filled her eyes. For the first time, she had seen a glimpse of the night her parents died. Cassian noticed immediately. "What did you see?" Evelyn looked up slowly. Fear mixed with anger. "I saw them." The Vampire King's expression darkened. "My parents." The words barely left her mouth before a horrible scream erupted from the Shadow Beast. Everyone turned. Black cracks were spreading across the creature's skin. Lucien's eyes narrowed. "It's dying." The beast looked directly at Evelyn. Its terrifying red eyes suddenly filled with sadness. "Run..." Evelyn froze. "What?" "Run from the Council." Then the creature whispered something that changed everything. "Trust none of the Alphas." Silence. Absolute silence. Damon stiffened. Kael frowned. Lucien's face became unreadable. And before anyone could react— BOOM! The Shadow Beast exploded into black ash. A violent shockwave swept across the territory. When the smoke cleared, nothing remained. Not a body. Not a bone. Nothing. Someone had silenced it. Permanently. A chill spread through Evelyn's body. Whoever controlled the Shadow Beast didn't want it revealing more secrets. Then a warrior came running through the ruined gates. "Alpha Damon!" The young wolf was breathing hard. "What happened?" Damon demanded. The warrior swallowed nervously. "We captured one of the rogues." Kael's eyes brightened. "Good." "But..." the warrior continued, "he's asking for Evelyn." Lucien immediately stepped forward. "No." The warrior looked terrified. "He says he has information about her mother." Evelyn's heart nearly stopped. Her mother. Again. Every clue seemed connected to her. To the prophecy. To the First Wolf. And to the people trying to kill her. "I want to see him," she said. "No," Damon answered instantly. "Absolutely not," Lucien added. Cassian crossed his arms. "I agree with them." Evelyn blinked. That was the first time all three powerful men had agreed on anything. Kael laughed. "Then we should definitely let her see him." Damon glared at him. Evelyn stepped forward. "I'm going." The determination in her voice surprised everyone. Even herself. For years, she had been afraid. Weak. Silent. But not anymore. If people were willing to start wars because of her... Then she deserved answers. Finally, Damon released a frustrated breath. "Fine." Lucien looked unhappy. Cassian looked suspicious. Kael looked entertained. The group began moving toward the underground prison. Torchlight flickered along the stone corridors. The deeper they went, the colder the air became. Evelyn's heart pounded harder with every step. Something felt wrong. Very wrong. Then they reached the prison cell. The rogue sat alone in the darkness. Head lowered. Chains wrapped around his wrists. For several seconds, he didn't move. Then he slowly lifted his face. And Evelyn gasped. Because she recognized him. Not from this life. From her vision. He was standing in the background the night her parents died. The rogue smiled weakly. "I've finally found you..." Then he spoke the words that shattered Evelyn's world. "Your father is still alive."
