Shaniel didn’t want to see him. Not today. Not after the way he had vanished last week without explanation, leaving her with questions she couldn’t ask.
Adrian, for his part, wasn’t exactly eager either. He had reasons a past he didn’t share, decisions he regretted, and a darkness he refused to let her step into.
Yet, the city had a way of forcing paths together. Shaniel spotted him at a gallery opening — just across the room, leaning against a wall, dark eyes scanning the crowd. She froze for a moment, debating whether to leave.
He noticed her immediately. The faint smirk tugged at his lips a smile that promised danger, curiosity, and trouble.
“Shaniel,” he said softly, almost hesitant. “I didn’t expect… well, I didn’t plan for this.”
“I didn’t either,” she replied coolly, stepping back slightly. “Maybe it’s better if we don’t meet at all.”
He raised an eyebrow, dark amusement in his eyes. “And miss seeing you frown at me? Impossible.”
Her jaw tightened. “Adrian, we can’t keep pretending this is… easy. You vanish. You show up. And I don’t even know why. Maybe we should just”
“Stop before you say something you regret?” he interrupted, voice low but edged with something vulnerable. “I know. I’ve been reckless. I have my reasons. You wouldn’t understand… yet.”
Shaniel stared at him, heart racing with frustration and something else curiosity, desire, anger. He was frustrating, dangerous, magnetic, and utterly infuriating.
“I’m not asking for explanations,” she said finally. “I just… don’t want this back-and-forth anymore.”
He sighed, a sound that carried weight and warning. “Neither do I. But some things from my past… they don’t disappear. And they won’t let me come close without complications.”
A tense silence fell between them, the city lights casting long shadows across his face. Shaniel felt it the pull, the danger, the undeniable connection and yet the distance, the walls between them, thickened.
She turned, walking away, leaving Adrian in the crowd. But both knew this wasn’t the end.
The sparks between them were far too dangerous to ignore.
