I walked back to the couch and sat quietly. Jesse slid in beside me, his shoulders tense with a burden too big for him. “How much did you hear?” I asked, though I already knew the answer. His voice was low, honest. “Everything.” Silence wrapped around us. Finally, he asked, “How do you feel?” I shook my head. “I don’t know. And that’s me being honest, I really don’t know.” We both stared at the wall, the hush thick around us until Jesse broke it. “I suspected something was wrong. But I figured it was just… small stuff.
