The first thing that reached me was warmth, too human to be sunlight. The smell came next: disinfectant, clean sheets, and the faint trace of Cade's scent. Somewhere close, a monitor hummed. When I opened my eyes, I understood why my body felt pinned. Cade lay behind me, his arm around my waist, both of us caught in the same blanket. It took a few slow seconds for last night to come back. He was asleep. His face looked calm, almost soft. The kind of peace that only shows up when you’re too tired to fake it. I should have pulled away but I didn’t. Then the air changed. I had a feeling that someone else was there. I turned my head and froze. Zayne was by the window, watching in a way that made my stomach twist. I pulled Cade’s hand away and got off the bed. My feet hit the cold floor.
