Lesson 3: Play Little Miss Nice Girl There was still silence serenading us as we stood on my balcony. "I'm surprised you haven't told me to piss off yet," Carter commented. I could tell his piercing blue eyes were glazing at me but I used a curtain of my strawberry blonde hair to shadow him. "Well, I am wondering about you falling to your death right now. It is quite a drop down," I admitted unashamedly. "Excuse me?" "You are excused." "And there's me thinking you are the quiet type," he mumbled. "Honestly, never do I seem to be the bitchy type either. But yeah, s**t happens," I added, I turned to him and gave a sweet smile. He arched an eyebrow. He cracked a crooked smile. I made him smile and I made him frown all in one day. Don't I deserve a medal or something? "And there's me thinking you'll only smile at a girl when she shows you her birthday suit. Aren't I talented?" I teased. "I thought it was all a facade, only in front of Clara or Sandy. You really are something aren't you?" "Depends because the main difference between me and your little flings is that they kiss ass and I kick ass." Oh, Bree, say anymore and that head of yours won't fit through the door. I felt my phone buzz in my pocket. I slipped it out and read the text. It was from Sandy. Stalker much? Sandy: Lesson 3: Play little Miss nice girl ;) I quickly typed back a reply completely disregarding my visitor. Bree: Two lessons in one day?! Oh hell no! "Texting your boyfriend?" Carter inquired curiously. I looked up at him. "Oh, I'm texting your sister," I stated. Maybe just should've lied... "You two have joined to the hip haven't you?" "Yeah, you could say that," I agreed. He furrowed his eyebrows. "What? Did you expect me to say something smartass?" He nodded. "Well, I think I've been bitchy enough to you today, come back tomorrow," I teased, my lips curling up to a small, half-hearted smile. He looked confused. "Did you hurt your head on the way back from school or something?" He asked and actually sounding concerned. "I take offence to that. Do you want me to make your death look like an accident?" My phone buzzed again. Sandy: Get in there girl! The more lessons the more likely he'll fall for you! "Your sister needs help, tell her I know this really good psychologist. She's my Mom's friend," I informed him. He completely ignored me. "Yeah. You hurt your head. What's up with the constant change in mood? One moment we're having a conversation and the other moment you're threatening to kill me," he said incredulously. "Can't keep up, eh?" He pursed his lips. I took this time to - finally - acknowledge his features. And I understood why some girls went light headed when he was around. Maybe it was his long, aristocratic nose that complimented his high cheekbones? Or the shape of his full lips and shade of his blue eyes? Maybe it was his hair, it was a sea of brown with the bed head rock vibe to it. Damn it. "What's with the scowl?" He questioned. What's with all the questions? Wait. Bree. Be nice. "Oh, I was just thinking," I said. "No doubt about me, eh?" Can your head get any bigger? "Why do I need to think of you when you're right here?" His eyebrows rose in surprise. "And you blame me for the constant change in mood you are flirty, then confused, then cocky and so on. Being a hypocrite isn't attractive you know." "Oh, so you want to be attracted to me?" He said repeated my words from earlier. "Predictable!" I lied. "How do you get girls with that attitude?" "Oh, so you approve of my antics now?" "Not really. Just saying," I said. I bit my tongue to prevent any further comments spitting out. He stared at me and honestly it was disconcerting. His phone buzzed. "I need to go now," he grumbled. I beamed. "Wooohooo!" I cheered, then coughed. "Oh I mean, that's so sad. If only you could stay longer." Carter rolled his eyes and left. * I walked beside Jack, the student body president, surfer dude vibe and a close friend of Sandy. I was silent. "For someone who plans on changing Carter Cohen's ways, you're awfully quiet," Jack commented. My eyes bulged slightly and I choked on air. "You know?" I spat out. Jack chuckled. "I'm the student body president I know everything," he stated. I arched an eyebrow; all the shyness of mine evaporating. "Bullshit. Sandy told you didn't she?" I said knowingly, I mean he was a close friend of hers and she doesn’t ever shut up. "Uh yeah." I just love how he gave in so quickly. "I knew it." "I take it back, you're not awfully quiet. You're as charming as Sandy makes you out to be." He said the last part awfully sarcastic. "What does Sandy say about me?" I inquired curiously. "She said you're lovely and feisty completely Carter's type but then again, in my opinion, anything that moves is Carter's type. Though she feels bad forcing you into doing this all she'll make it up by letting you choose your dress when Carter and you get married," he said. I stared at him as if he was an alien from a distant galaxy. "What?! We're not going to get married!" I exclaimed, cautious to keep my voice low so no one could hear. "Oh so inconspicuous Bree," he said, noting that I wasn't quiet enough and a bypasser, possibly a freshman, overheard my words. I cringed and Jack gave a sweet smile, which only made me hope that he wasn't much of a player than Carter. "Why am I even walking with you right now?" I asked and pondered it myself. "I have some news, as the student body president to share with a few peers until it will be announced and Sandy told me to pick you up from class," he answered. I nodded and remained silent knowing I already had to deal with Carter an a replica doesn't help. We reached Sandy who was with her boyfriend, a guy I've never met but seen from afar and who takes the name Hudson. They were in a lovers embrace moving closer and closer and closer til... "CANNONBALL!" Jack bellowed and dove towards the couple who quickly responded resulting to him fall onto the ground. Jack stood up, straightened himself and crossed his arms. Hudson grabbed his girlfriend’s hand again, and it was it was almost awkwardly quiet until the last person arrived. Carter approached and stood next to me causing my smile to vanish. Sandy gave me the look, and my smile magically reappeared. "So what's with the meeting? And could you hurry up I've got places to be," Carter said grumpily? "You mean houses to trespass, girls to f**k and hearts to break?" I amended. Jack and Hudson laughed. Sandy cracked a smile but I could read the telepathic messages she was sending me in her eyes. I looked down to the ground knowing if I had to be little Miss nice girl I had to fix my act. "My humble apologies Carter. What I meant to say was I'm sure Jack here would be considerate and make this meeting brief so you could carry on with what is important." This time Carter cracked a smile but he didn't say anything. Jack unnecessarily cleared his throat for all the attention. "Now everyone here, apart from Bree would know about the annual carnival our school organizes every year, correct?" Everyone apart from me nodding, though the idea of an annual fair was pretty self-explanatory. "How could we not? You make us participate every year," Hudson grumbled. Jack ignored this. "Well this year, as the school board feels particularly generous a prize will be given to the team who raises the most money with the most creative idea," Jack continued. "They are bluffing, they said that last year and the year before," Hudson commented. "Could you please shut up?" Jack questioned him. Hudson didn’t respond. "Continuing, this year the school board is feeling extra special and the winners get the opportunity to spend two weeks during summer in Hawaii."
