Lesson 6: Talk To The Player's Ex "So you and Carter went to the same camp for three years and you two didn't even meet?" Sandy asked suddenly the next day. "Weird isn't it? But then again it was a big camp, a lot of kids went. The population must've been well over a thousand," I replied. Sandy looked as if she wanted to say something, but was holding back. I decided not to question it. She would ask in her own time. "It makes sense now," she said. Sandy paused in the school corridor. "Did your parents tell you about the anniversary weekend?" "Yes, they did. When we got home last night," I answered. Sandy smiled. It wasn't casual or wholehearted, it definitely suggested an ulterior motive. "Do you know what means?" She asked rhetorically. I answered anyway. "Do I want to?" Sandy shook her head nonetheless she told me. "Slumber party!" She announced. I would've groaned - especially if it had anything to do with Carter, but I shrugged. "I'm alright with that," I informed her. She blinked twice. "Excuse me?" "You're excused." Sandy cracked a smile. "You don't mind having a slumber party?" "Last time I checked I didn't have a problem spending time with you, I only have problems spending time with your brother." "Wooooohooooo!" Sandy practically screamed before she wrapped her arms around me and gave me a bone crushing hug, one which I was sure squeezed all the oxygen out of me. "C-can't b-breathe - " I managed to stutter. "Oops. Sorry Bree," Sandy apologized before letting me go. "I have one exception," I said, knowing very well that Sandy would be making plans as we speak. "I don't care what you say, we're having a karaoke tournament. I don't care how tone deaf we are." I cracked a smile. "We can completely forget about the 'meet the coach' thing for that night. I'm not going to sleep in some skimpy nightwear." "Okay. Plus it gives you a chance to be more yourself. Right?" "Exactly." "By the way, I wasn't going to make you wear skimpy nightwear... he'd stare at you whatever you wear," Sandy assured. "Because he's a pervert?" I guessed. "Yep! But, he prefers to say that he’s 'giving the ladies all of his attention'." "And you want me to fall for that... if he ends up breaking my heart, you're going to smash his head in with a brick," I informed her. She smiled, not at all mind my occasional violent actions against her brother. "Okay, I will. Oh yeah, before I forget Hailey and I are going to the mall this weekend, maybe get some stuff for the fundraiser... come with?" The last part Sandy said awfully nicely. I contemplated and thought about last Saturday. "Do I have to wake up early?" "Nope," she promised. "Okay, I'll come." * From Monday night there hadn't been any more lessons. It's Saturday. I suppose this is a way of saying that Sandy wants me to work with what I have? I then realised why was I caring so much? Maybe it's because ever since I've been here that's all I've practically have to do alongside school. I double checked my pouch to see if I had my phone and my money but as I did I felt a vibration from my phone which indicated that Sandy was outside waiting. I kissed my parents 'goodbye' and left. Hailey already seated in her convertible and Sandy shotgun. I let myself into the back and we drove to the mall. On the way, Sandy stamped her foot down saying how important it was to have matching uniforms or some kind of giveaway so everyone knew we were in a team. "So we're just going to dedicate ourselves into finding uniforms then?" I asked as we exited the car. "No, if we see something we'll get it, otherwise... we're going on a shopping spree!" Sandy started, Hailey joining in with the end cheer. I smiled at the girls. As we walked in Sandy wanted to link arms like an elementary school girl but I wasn't into that kind of stuff. I refused. Sandy smirked, the smirk infamously resembled Carter's smirk. She teased of how she wasn't Carter touching her and if it was Carter, he'd want to touch me everywhere. I tried hard not to gag at the thought of Carter's wandering fingers, who knows what he does with them or where he puts them. I banished the thought of him when I remembered Clara. Yuck. * "Oh my gosh!" Sandy squealed, picking up a pair of designer shades. "Hudson would love these - and he would look so sexy in them!" I laughed when I saw an old lady walk past as Sandy spoke, her face shook in disgust. She must be thinking something on the lines of: 'youngsters these days and their language'. Mind you, I couldn't really class 'sexy' as a bad word. Before I could comment Sandy says, "I'm going to go pay." She turned around and walked away. "How cute is that? Love, love, love..." Hailey rambled mindlessly. I turned towards her, she started to look at shades. "It is really nice," I agreed. "You've never experienced love?" I hoped I wasn't too bold, yet Hailey looked as if she didn't mind. "I've experienced first love - if that counts." I smiled at the thought of first love. It's so innocent and special, almost like heaven on earth but as much as it can feel like heaven... it hurts like hell. "So have I. I'm guessing like me, yours didn't end well either?" I asked. She nodded and looked up at me. A shadow started to shroud her irises. I gave a sympathetic smile in return. I knew what it felt like. "Yes. I guess it means we're too good for them." I nodded in agreement. "We can say that but you'll remember the way they held your hand and made you smile. You'll remember that song you'll always listen to on the radio together and the way he showed you off to the world." "Guys are stupid. But to be fair you can't lie with them nor live without them." At the end of saying this statement, Hailey gave a little smile - almost as if she had someone in mind. "You like someone, don't you?" I asked her. She blushed. "Am I that obvious?" "When a girl loves someone you can see in it her smile and when a guy loves someone you can see it in his eyes." "You know what? I really hope you succeed with this 'coach' thingy because you're a very nice girl Bree. I'd hate to see Carter break your heart." "Well I'm not going to give him my heart if I know he'll break it," I said. "But how will you know. I know how Carter is, he will make you feel like a princess. He'd give you the illusion that he wants to spend the rest of his life with you. He'll break down all your walls then stab you in the heart. I've seen it happen far too many times Bree." I pursed my lips, unsure how to counter that. "I don't know but I suppose how Sandy is sure with Hudson. If Carter and I are meant to be? I'll be sure." "If so I suppose you'll have to take care of him because I assure you, his first love didn't end so well either." I furrowed my eyebrow, a feeling of satisfaction filled my body. I was right. He is tainted that's why he is the way he is. "I'm back!" Sandy exclaimed, changing the atmosphere completely. Sandy scanned our faces and then smiled. She looked at the pair of shades in Hailey's hand. "Aww, are you going to get these for Jack? Are you going to confess?" I chuckled at Sandy, she had no shame. Hailey blushed and put them back. "Nope. C'mon there's a sale in the shop next door. I want to go." * Sandy and I exited Hailey's car and waved her goodbye. She waved back before pulling away and heading to her house. "Look at that Bree. You did a lesson all by yourself." I looked at Sandy, confused. "Huh?" I intelligently replied. "Lesson 6: talk to the player's ex."
