Lesson 13: Always Classy, Never Trashy, Just A Little Bit Nasty "SANDY! BREE!" I jumped at the sound of Carter's rage. We were making breakfast whilst counting down the seconds to our death. We kinda bit get over the top with the perfume... "Yes, my dearest brother?" Sandy called out innocently. Carter said nothing instead we heard heavy footsteps. And my God, he smelt him way before we saw him. He face was red. His nostrils flared. His usual generous lips were pressed together into a thin line. And he snarled. The stench of the cheap perfume made me cough. I paused buttering my toast and pinched my nose. Carter glared at me and if looks could kill... man I was dead. "Did Clara come over last night?" Sandy teased daringly. Carter's gaze snapped to his sister. "Harhar. Very funny. Why the f**k did you spray this perfume over everything in my room?!" He yelled. "We didn't do it," Sandy lied smoothly. "I would say I smell bullshit but the only thing I can smell is this stench. How do girls wear this?!" "You should ask Clara that question. Bree and I like using Dior." "You're so impossible Sandy," Carter declared. He looked at me and took a few steps forward. I pinched my nose slightly harder. "Did you do this?" He seethed. "You clearly know the answer to that Carter." Gosh, I sound weird when I talk with my nose pinched. Carter paused. Most likely to be amused by my voice. "Why?" He asked. I was tempted to look at his sister and be a right traitor but I wasn't that mean. I shrugged. "It could be worse. We could've decorated your face with Sharpie pens." Carter's lips twitched. He mumbled something underneath his voice. Frowning, he turned around and walked out of the room. Aw, no fight? As he left through the door a pang of guilt hit me. I felt sick in the stomach. "Ugh," I commented. "You're such a softy. I told you, you were warming up to him." "Oh c'mon. Don't me you don't feel bad." "Okay. Okay. Maybe we did go a little bit far," Sandy accepted grudgingly. "Shall we...?" "You. He's warming up to you too. When Hailey and I put makeup on him... he screwed at us for days. He could barely argue with you right now." "Okay. Fine. But finish making my breakfast then," I said. Sandy agreed and walked across the kitchen. I grabbed the bag we had prepared before we sprayed his room and I left the kitchen. I walked towards the stairs and climbed them. "Carter? Where are you?" I called out. There was no response. Well, of course, there wasn't going to be one. I checked all the other rooms and realised that surprisingly he was in his bedroom. Hesitantly, I knocked on the door. "Carter open the door. Yeah, I know you're mad. Just open it anyway." "What do you want?" He grumbled from behind the door. "For you to open the door. Like I said." "Why?" He questioned. "Just because." "Wow. You're so persuasive," he commented sarcastically. "I have some clean clothes for you to wear. That's why." Carter didn't say anything. I heard him shift and move towards the door. I coughed as the perfume filled my nostrils once more when Carter opened the door. "Oh God, that's bad. Wow," I voiced awkwardly. "Well, you don't say." "Hey Mister, don't use that tone with me," I warned. "You sprayed my room with cheap perfume. We're not exactly going to be best buds, Bree." "Enough with the b***h fit. Live a little. It's not going to kill you, you know. Chill out. Anyways, before we sabotaged your room. Sandy and I decided to cut you some slack. We gathered some clothes and whatnot so you don't slaughter us completely. Oh and open the window, there's some air refreshing stuff in here... your room should smell like flowers in no time." I added the last part with a smile sweetly. I offered Carter the bag which he took and then I started to walk away. Then one remembered something. "Sandy and I expect a ride to school!" I informed him and turned around briefly to glance at him. * Carter didn't say anything when he took Sandy and me to school. I sat at the back, Sandy was shotgun and ever so often Carter would look in the rear view mirror - not when he needed to - and sometimes our eyes would meet. But one of us always looked away. We reached school. Carter still didn't say anything. He left his car, waited for us, locked it and walked away. After giving him those clothes, he still holds a grudge? Hmph. Sandy and I walked to homeroom. Everyone was buzzed; after all, it was the last day of the academic year. Though some of the Seniors looked like they were going to cry, the majority couldn't wait to get out of here. After the teacher droned on an announcement came through the intercom. The headmistress wanted all pupils to come to the auditorium immediately for the final assembly. I was looking forward but slightly dreading it. They'll be suspended for sure when it comes to the announcement of the fundraiser winners. It never ceased to amaze me how the auditorium managed to seat all the pupils with at least 100 seats empty. Though they were the seats that the front, the seats at the back were always filled. In the announcement, Mrs Gregor had ordered everyone to sit in their teams meaning I stumbled upon sitting in between Sandy and Carter. Surprise. Surprise. Noticeably, Carter had relaxed. Sandy and I's earlier prank was long forgotten. I sat down on the comfy chair and fixated my eyes on Mrs Gregor who was not that far away. "It gives me great pleasure to say that this has been one of the best school years in the 25 years I have been here," she started. I tried to concentrate but someone from behind tapped my shoulder. It was Lucas. "Hey, Darling. My, don't you look fine today," he whispered to me. I gave him an uneasy smile which evidently caught Carter's attention. "Thanks, Luke," I replied, speaking in the same volume as him. "So how are you planning on spending your holidays then?" He asked curiously. "I haven't really decided yet -" "Could you two cut the chit-chat? I'm trying to pay attention!" Carter whispered shouted at us. Luke and I whipped our heads towards him and raised an eyebrow. "When have you cared about Mrs Gregor's career?" Luke retaliated. "Could you guys zip it? You're drawing attention!" Sandy interrupted. I looked around and saw that she was right, many bystanders looked our way. Feeling a little shy, I cowered into my seat and looked towards the stage. Mrs Gregor was talking about her career. I felt radiation pulsate from beside me, I looked towards Carter and his leg was shaking, his fists were clenched and his jaw was set. "What is your problem?" I snapped quietly. I didn't even know I had said it until the words escaped my mouth. He turned his head. "Why do you care?" He retorted. I roll my eyes at him. "You're being a right asshole today. Why is everything bothering you?" "Why do you care?" He repeated. "Because... because you're my friend Carter. That's why I care." My voice came out soft and sincere. He looked at me, he had the same look in his eye as he did on the night we were baking. His eyes unfocused and he looked away. He dipped his head down and mumbled something underneath his voice. "I'm sorry," he whispered so quietly I wasn't sure I heard it. A smile touched my lips. "Don't worry about it. Everyone has their b***h fits, now stop being a possessive jerk." "Bree I -" "Good morning ladies and gentlemen!" Jack greeted loudly from the stage. The microphone abruptly had it's feedback reach everyone's ears and shook Carter from what he wanted to say. "Sorry about that folks. Alright, where to begin..." Jack rambled on about how much of a privilege it was to be the Student Body president and an insight of the role for anyone who wanted to apply in the fall. During his speech, I couldn't concentrate. My mind was eating me alive at what Carter could've possibly wanted to say. It was pathetic - I know - but I couldn't help but wonder. I what? Jack soon finished, everyone applauded before he disappeared from the stage. I could just about see him making his way back to his seat next to Hailey. The Headmistress took the stand once again. "And now it is the moment you have all been waiting for..." she teased. This got everyone's attention. She smiled. She had a golden envelope in her hand but if I knew any better - and I did - it was for show. She must've already known the winners but didn't want to cease the opportunity of taunting us all. "This year a phenomenal amount of money was raised for our chosen charity. You alone managed to raise an astonishing £50,456. That is a record for all the schools in this state. On behalf of the charity, they thank each and everyone who participated and wish everyone good health and good luck for the future. And I would like to thank you all for being very eager this year. "Now to reveal the team that has raised the most amount of money." Cue the drum roll. Slowly she opened the golden envelope and pulled out the paper. "This team alone raised $4,763. That is $2,000 on their first stall. $625 on their second stall and $2,138 on their third stall." Mrs Gregor paused. Some pupils groaned - I was guessing they were the ones who did two or one stalls. But I concentrated on my own team. We had a chance and I had a good feeling. "Give a round of applause for the fortunate team which will be going to Hawaii that is... Jack Parker, Hailey Smith, Hudson Grey, Sandy Cohen, Carter Cohen and Bree Opal!" My eyes widened first and my mouth fell agape. I blinked a couple times and wasn't deceived at all. I looked towards first Carter who was smiling like a kid on Christmas. "We did it..." I whispered. Despite the applause, Carter still heard me and nodded. "Hell yeah we did," he replied. "Can the team please come up to the stage," Mrs Gregor ordered. I got off my seat, feeling a little like jelly and followed Sandy - she was practically hyperventilating - to the stage. The school stopped their applause, some people looked slightly better but sent us smiles nonetheless. We reached the stage and I felt a bit hot under the lighting. "Now. I will give you everything you need after this assembly but for now stay here. I have another surprise. This is not for the winners but in fact, it is for the runners-up. "They lost out by $10. Only ten dollars. They only had three of the same thing but still managed to raise $4,753, which is a lot to raise when you are just selling food. Everyone put their hands together for Blake Wheeler, Makayla Daniels and Lucas Knight. Please, could you free come to the stage." I squinted dorm I could make out who the free weren't I saw Lucas - Luke - the guy Carter was jealous of, walk towards the stage with a girl and boy. They reached the stage with big smiles plastered on their face but you could make out that they were gutted about the $10 difference. "Since this group is very small and we managed to save money from buying 6 not 8 tickets for the winners. The school has arranged for the runners-up to stay 5 days in Hawaii. The winning team will spend two weeks." The three stood agape in front of the headmistress before jumping - literally - for joy. The girl looked like she was going to faint. Randomly I looked at Carter who pursed his lips, his smile was long gone. Damn his mood swings. * As soon as we ran out of the auditorium in joy Jack yelled to everyone that they'd be a party at Carter's. Luckily he was already prepared for this. He probably just hoped that the cheap perfume smell was a memory of the past. Right now Hailey, Sandy and I were in my room. Hailey had brought over clothes, Sandy did too with the addition of makeup and hair styling stuff. "Before I look at anything you girls have got, please consider my wardrobe," I said and thought for a moment I didn't own anything I didn't want to wear, right? Oh s**t. "On second thoughts... show me what you have?" I amended, a particular dress burning in my mind. Sandy studied me, her eyes widened and she headed towards my wardrobe. She'd looked in there at least 1000 times and she's never found it. Hailey joined her. I didn't stop them. I knew they'll crack on to where it is. I just stood anxiously and watched them. They won't find it. "Aha!" Sandy explained and pulled out the black garment from underneath the secret compartment. Shit. Why didn't I dispose of it when I was packing my clothes. Sandy held out the dress and showed Hailey. "Oh yeah, baby. This will kill Carter." "I will not wear that Sandy." "Well, you did tell us to look into your wardrobe, Bree. You'll nail it," Hailey commented. "That dress is too... slutty for my liking. Too Clara." "Barely. Now model it for us," Sandy ordered. I shook my head. "No way." "Theresa no point in arguing Bree. Sandy always wins." I scowled at Hailey, hating how she was right. I trudged towards Sandy and took the dress. "With or without a bra?" I asked her. She clicked her tongue. "You could wear a black one it will match the outfit... Carter would like that. But that again if you wore a push-up blood red one. That will scream "look at me, look at me". He would like that more. But if you didn't wear one... man he would go crazy." "It scares me how you know what your brother likes in this context." "It's common knowledge at school. I surprised you haven't picked it up." "Why don't I just wear a nude colour one?" I suggested. "Ooh. I like that. Yeah, do that." I nodded and grudgingly retrieved the bra from my drawer before stepping into my ensuite. I placed the dress on the side and just glared at it. I then realised I was being stupid. I sighed and started to strip. I stood in my striped underwear and put on the outfit. Damn it. It still fits. The dress hugged my body in every way possible and it didn't help that there was padding which enhanced my boobs. I looked in the mirror and as much as I would never admit aloud. It did look good. The back of the dress was soft lace that practically exposed my skin before the plain black waistband introduced silk black ruffles which fell to my mid-thigh. The front, however, had a deep neck so much that it practically split my cleavage but hid it all the same. The bodice was tight and sequined. If you concentrated enough - and I knew Carter will - you could just vaguely make out my skin coloured bra. I stepped away from the mirror and entered the other room and took a deep breath. Sandy blew a loud wolf whistle. "Wow you're smokin'," Hailey commented. "Carter wouldn't know what hit him!" Sandy squealed. I rolled my eyes at her and suddenly started to dread this party. * "I decided that there's likely to be two lessons tonight and that's because there's a party," Sandy told her after putting on some wedges. "And for now?" I asked, feeling very out of place with ankle-breaking stilettos strapped to my ankles, pin straight hair and smoky eyes. Sandy and Hailey shared a look and smiled. They spoke in unison. "Lesson 13: always classy, never trashy, just a little bit nasty."
