Rylan’s question hangs in the air like a blade that hasn’t decided where to fall. “Which one are you?” No one breathes properly after it. Not even me. Because the answer doesn’t arrive the way answers usually do. It doesn’t come as words first. It comes as awareness. A settling. A narrowing. Aria takes one step back instinctively. “No…” she whispers. “That’s not supposed to be the response pattern.” Mara turns sharply. “What response pattern?” Aria doesn’t answer immediately. Her eyes are fixed on me. On something she is seeing that no one else fully can. “The system is adapting,” she says slowly. Rylan’s voice is tight. “Stop calling her a system.” Aria finally looks at him. “I’m calling what I can measure,” she snaps. “And right now, I can’t measure her as singular.”
