The air felt thick, like it was hard to breathe, as the ceremony began. I stayed near the back of the room, hiding in the shadows. I didn’t want anyone to notice me. Everyone else leaned forward, their eyes glued to the front, waiting to see what would happen next. My heart wouldn’t stop pounding, each beat louder than the last.
