Chapter 6

A year later, Amelia stood at the window of their shared penthouse, looking out over the city that had brought them together. Alexander came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. “What are you thinking about?” he asked, resting his chin on her shoulder. “About how lucky I am,” Amelia said, leaning back against him. “I never thought I’d find love in the middle of a business merger.” Alexander chuckled, kissing her cheek. “Neither did I. But I’m glad I did.” As they stood together, watching the city lights twinkle in the night, Amelia knew that their journey hadn’t been easy. But they had faced their fears, confronted their pasts, and found something truly extraordinary love worth fighting for. Amelia and Alexander’s relationship flourished. They became the power couple everyone in the office whispered about but never dared to confront directly. Alexander’s charming demeanor and Amelia’s sharp intellect made them unstoppable. Together, they turned Carlisle Industries into one of the most influential companies in the country. However, not everything from Alexander's past stayed buried. One afternoon, while Amelia was organizing her upcoming marketing campaign, her phone buzzed. It was a message from an unknown number. She opened it cautiously, and her heart sank. There, on the screen, was a photograph of Alexander sitting across from a woman in a dimly lit restaurant. Her arm was resting intimately on his, and they seemed deep in conversation. Amelia recognized the woman immediately: Celeste Beaumont, a high-profile socialite and Alexander’s ex-fiance Amelia’s thoughts raced. Alexander had told her about Celeste when they first started dating. He had ended things with Celeste because he felt their relationship was more of a business merger than a genuine connection. Yet, here they were, clearly more than just acquaintances. Amelia’s fingers trembled as she dialed Alexander’s number. He answered on the first ring. “Hey, love. I was just thinking about you,” he said warmly. “Alexander,” Amelia began, her voice steady, “why are you meeting Celeste?” There was a brief pause on the other end. “Amelia, it’s not what you think. Celeste reached out to me. She’s in some trouble and wanted my help.” “What kind of trouble?” Amelia pressed. Alexander sighed. “She’s facing a serious legal issue, and she believes I’m the only one who can help her. I agreed to meet with her to hear her out. That’s all.” Amelia wanted to believe him, but the uncertainty gnawed at her. “Alexander, I need to know that you’re not keeping things from me. I don’t want to find out from a random text message that you’re having secret meetings.” “I’m sorry, Amelia,” Alexander said sincerely. “I should have told you. I didn’t want to worry you, especially because I’m not sure how much I can even help her. But I promise you, it’s purely business. You’re the only one I love.” Amelia sighed, the tension in her chest loosening slightly. “Alright. But please, no more secret A few days later, Amelia received another message from the same unknown number. This time, it wasn’t a photograph. It was a single line of text: *“Meet me if you want to know the truth about Alexander.”* Her mind went blank with fear and curiosity. Could Alexander be hiding more from her? Was there more to his past than he had revealed? Amelia knew she needed answers, and she couldn’t rely on Alexander to provide them. She texted back, asking for a location. The reply came swiftly, directing her to a quiet cafe in a less-frequented part of the city. That evening, she found herself sitting at a small table in the back corner of the cafe anxiously tapping her fingers on the surface. The bell above the door jingled as a figure walked in. A tall man, wearing a black suit and a fedora, approached her table. “Amelia Hart?” he asked, his voice low and gruff. “Yes,” she replied, trying to hide her unease. “Who are you?” “Let’s just say I’m someone who knows Alexander better than you do,” the man said, sliding into the seat across from her. “I’m here to give you the truth. Alexander isn’t who he says he is. He has connections to some very dangerous people, and Celeste is only the beginning.” Amelia’s heart pounded in her chest. “What do you mean?” The man leaned closer. “Alexander has been involved in illegal dealings for years. Money laundering, insider trading, you name it. He’s kept it hidden well, but people like me know the truth. And Celeste? She’s involved, too. She’s using him to clean her own mess.” Amelia felt a cold chill run down her spine. Could this be true? Could Alexander, the man she loved, be hiding such dark secrets? “You’re lying,” she said, her voice trembling. The man smirked. “Believe what you want. But if you care about your future, you’ll keep your distance from Alexander. Or you might end up caught in his web of lies.” He stood up and left without another word, leaving Amelia alone with her thoughts.
