The headlights cut through the underground garage like knives.
Kai’s body tensed beneath her instantly.
One second they were tangled together, breathing hard.
The next, he was all lethal calm.
“Get in the back,” he ordered, voice sharp. “Now.”
Elara scrambled over the console.
Bullets shattered the rear window before they even moved. Glass rained down.
“Stay down!” Kai barked.
He slammed the car into drive.
The SUV fishtailed out of the garage.
More headlights appeared behind them — three, maybe four vehicles.
The Russians weren’t playing anymore.
Kai drove like the devil himself was chasing them.
He weaved through narrow cobblestone streets.
Tires screamed on the slick roads.
Elara stayed low in the back, clutching the seat, her torn red dress soaked with rain and fear.
“Kai—”
“Not now,” he growled.
His steel-grey eyes flicked to the rearview mirror.
“They’re gaining.”
A bullet pinged off the side of the car.
Another shattered the side mirror.
Kai took a sharp turn into an alley so narrow the mirrors scraped against the walls.
Elara’s heart pounded.
“How many?”
“Too many.”
His jaw clenched tight.
Blood seeped from the graze on his arm.
“They want the money back. And they want you dead.”
The car burst out of the alley.
Kai floored it, accelerating toward the outskirts.
“We can’t outrun them forever,” Elara said.
“We need a plan.”
“I have one.”
He glanced at her, eyes fierce.
“But you’re not going to like it.”
“Try me.”
Kai swerved hard.
“We go off-road. Into the forest. On foot.”
Elara didn’t hesitate.
“Then we run.”
They abandoned the car at the edge of the city.
Kai grabbed the emergency bag — weapons, cash, the tablet, first-aid kit.
He took her hand and they sprinted into the trees.
The forest was dark. Freezing.
Branches whipped at their faces.
Snow crunched under their feet.
Flashlight beams cut through the darkness behind them.
“Faster,” Kai urged, pulling her along.
Elara’s lungs burned.
Her dress was torn and muddy.
Her heels were long gone.
But she kept running, gripping his hand like a lifeline.
They ran for what felt like hours.
Kai changed direction multiple times.
The shouts behind them faded.
They collapsed against a large tree, both breathing hard.
Kai immediately checked her over.
Hands running down her arms and sides.
“Are you hurt?”
“Bruised. But okay.”
She looked at his arm. “You’re bleeding.”
“It’s nothing.”
Elara tore a strip from her dress and pressed it against the wound.
Kai winced but didn’t pull away.
His eyes stayed locked on her face the entire time.
When she finished, he caught her hand and held it against his chest.
“You should have run when you had the chance,” he said quietly.
“Left me behind.”
Elara shook her head.
“I’m not leaving you.”
Something raw flashed in his eyes.
He pulled her into his arms and kissed her like the world was ending.
Desperate. Fierce. Real.
When they broke apart, Kai rested his forehead against hers.
“I was supposed to kill you,” he whispered.
“Instead… I can’t imagine a world without you in it.”
Elara’s heart clenched.
“Then don’t. Keep me.”
They stayed wrapped around each other for a long moment.
Then Kai pulled back reluctantly.
“We need to keep moving. The safe house is still a few kilometers away.”
They walked through the night, Kai’s arm around her shoulders, keeping her warm.
By the time they reached the hidden bunker entrance, Elara was exhausted.
The bunker was small but solid.
Concrete walls. A generator. Basic furniture. One large bed in the corner.
Kai sealed the heavy door and powered up the generator.
Warm light filled the space.
Elara sank onto the edge of the bed.
Adrenaline finally crashed.
Kai knelt in front of her, gently cleaning the cuts on her legs and arms.
“You’re incredible,” he said softly.
“Most people would have broken by now.”
“I’m not most people,” she replied with a tired smile.
“I stole from the mafia and married an assassin.”
Kai finished bandaging her and stood.
He peeled off his torn shirt, revealing hard muscle and new bruises.
Elara’s mouth went dry.
He noticed her staring.
His eyes darkened.
“Shower,” he said roughly.
“There’s hot water. I’ll keep watch.”
Elara stood.
She paused at the bathroom door.
“Come with me,” she said quietly.
Kai’s jaw tightened.
“Elara…”
“I’m not asking for pretend anymore.”
She held out her hand.
“I’m asking for you.”
He crossed the room in three strides and took her hand.
They stepped into the shower together.
Clothes fell away as hot water cascaded over them.
Kai washed her hair with careful hands.
She did the same for him.
Every touch felt like a promise.
When they reached the bed, they didn’t rush.
Kai laid her down like she was precious.
He kissed every bruise, every scrape.
When he finally moved inside her, it was deep and slow, their eyes locked the entire time.
“Mine,” he whispered against her lips.
“Yours,” she breathed back.
They came apart together, clinging to each other.
Afterward, Kai pulled her against his chest, stroking her scarlet hair.
“Thirty days,” he said hoarsely.
“That was the deal.”
Elara pressed a kiss to his chest.
“What if I want forever?”
Kai’s steel-grey eyes darkened with fierce emotion.
“Then we’re both in trouble,” he said, kissing her again.
But outside the bunker, the forest was no longer silent.
Headlights appeared in the distance.
The hunters had found them……
