Weak winter sunshine greeted Ross and Drake as they emerged from the Queensway tunnel, connecting Liverpool with Birkenhead. With Ross at the wheel, they followed the A552 for a short distance before turning onto Storeton Road, officially the B5151 heading in the direction of South Mersey Golf Club. Following directions provided by D.I. Newcombe from the Birkenhead Station, they soon reached a left turn that led them along a narrow lane, which opened out to reveal a large, almost mansion type private home dead ahead of them, partially hidden by a row of Elm trees, that held between them a pair of wrought-iron gates, painted in quite garish, metallic gold, gloss paint.
