CHAPTER 34 It was a few minutes after six and the day was fading out when Tana’s Uber driver pulled up in front of the Paine Properties building on West Portal Avenue. The driver, a pregnant Asian woman in her late twenties wearing cat eye sunglasses and way too much eyeliner, glanced at Tana as she opened the door. “You buy house?” she said, startling Tana. She turned and saw the sunglasses in the rearview. Ever since that first night, when her Uber driver turned into Helen Mayfield, she had feared that it might happen again, and wondered if she should switch to Lyft or start taking cabs. But she liked riding Uber and finding a cab in the city when she needed one wasn’t easy.
