CHAPTER 19 MONDAY, JUNE 7, 2010 Helen Mayfield sees the reporters waiting for her to come out after her shift. They’re crowding the sidewalk in front of the DMV. The one on Fell Street in San Francisco. She’s dead tired after nine hours on her feet processing vehicle registrations, license applications, renewals and transfers of ownership. She still has to pick up Emma at daycare. They’ll charge her if she’s late.
