CHAPTER 20 It was just after midnight when Powell wheeled the Bronco into the red zone in front of Tana’s building. She lowered the window and looked out at the dark. Empty streets, no one around, just the hum of the cables running beneath the tracks on the Hyde Street cable car line. The sound had kept her up at night when she first moved into the building, but over time she found it comforting, and soon fell asleep to the rhythms of the system’s underground machinery.
