Tana’s breath caught in her throat. She sat back, as if slammed against the sofa by the sheer force of what she had learned. She knew she had to say something, but it was as if the simple task of forming words was, for a moment, beyond her.
“They were on the jury together?” she said finally, as if all she could do was repeat what Powell had just told her. “Helen and Allison?”
Powell nodded.
“She never told me…”
“Probably never told anybody else either.”
“I can’t believe it,” Tana said. “It’s like everything keeps turning into something else.”
Powell smiled. “Yeah, I know what you mean.”
“But why didn’t she tell me?”
“Didn’t want you to know is my guess.”
