Powell jaw dropped. He exhaled, floored by the news, and stared at Tana. “He was in on it?”
“Louise was going through his stuff after he died when she found out about it.”
Powell shook his head in disgust. “That must’ve hurt. So what happened?”
“Treadway and Carmen were having an affair.”
Powell reacted with disbelief. “Treadway and Carmen?”
“Yeah. And then Jimmy LaSalle found out about it—”
Powell scowled. “Jimmy LaSalle?”
“Yeah. “Jimmy LaSalle,” Tana said.
The barmaid returned with a round of beers. She set the mugs down on the table, then moved away.
“So you were saying that Jimmy LaSalle found out about Treadway’s affair.”
Tana sipped her drink, then nodded. “Yeah, according to Louise, he pressured Carmen to take the bribe and when she turned him down—”
