CHAPTER FORTY The rain was little more than a drizzle when Charlotte set out not long after daylight forced its way through low clouds. The meeting with Sid was about an hour away, but first she planned to climb to the top of the falls. Underfoot, the ground was soggy and slippery. Her runners were ruined in minutes as wet mud caked the sides and soaked through to her socks. Although the air wasn’t cold, she’d grabbed the trench coat on the way out to offer some protection against the weather. Water-filled potholes and fallen branches slowed her progress but as always, reaching the top of the cliff made the climb worthwhile.
