23 Sunlight encroaches the darkness of the cave, a mere reflection from the walls outside. There’s barely enough light to see Zhen and Takeshi beside me, arrows and spear at the ready. Seeing their faces—no matter how dim lit—is almost as reassuring as the sun’s return, even though they wear the tired, frightened expressions of people who haven’t slept for fear of death. We’d been silent most of the night, only getting a fright when we heard the laboured breathing return. But it was Pip, who had managed to fall asleep again, and is still snoozing now, his head resting against Quell’s sniper rifle.
