From line of sight alone, it looks like crossing the plains would provide the shortest distance to the Great Hall. But how to get across the canyon? Another option is to climb down into the canyon, and go through it. Going around rather than straight through would surely take longer, and there’s the small problem of the canyon walls being mostly smooth on this side. I can’t see a way of getting down there. The walls on the other side are cragged with ledges mostly taken up by breeding Pteranodons and their offspring.
Another thing to consider is: the plains are full of dinosaurs and aliens piloting spacecraft, but at least I’d see them coming. The canyon is inconspicuously empty, save for Pteranodons swooping along the river. Who knows what is lurking down there.
