Episode 4: The Mentor

1511 Words
The estate felt different as Lily approached it, the moonstone warm against her palm, nestled in her pocket. The world seemed to shimmer at the edges of her vision, as though the ancient magic she had just uncovered had lifted a veil from her eyes. What had once been ordinary now felt charged with meaning, as if the very air she breathed had shifted to something new and mysterious. Lily paused at the treeline, her heart still pounding from the revelations of the forest. She had found something ancient, something powerful, and though she had no idea how deep the magic went, she knew one thing: she wasn’t the same person who had left this house in tears just a short while ago. Her hand tightened around the moonstone. She could still hear her mother’s voice echoing in her mind, the soft, reassuring whisper: “Trust destiny.” The world felt larger now, full of mysteries she had only begun to touch. And Lily? She was ready to explore them. But first, she needed to navigate her way through the cold reality of her stepmother’s house. The celebration inside the estate had quieted somewhat. The laughter had dimmed to muted conversations, and the scent of fine wines and rich food wafted through the open windows. The high society of Blackwood’s pack elites had gathered to bask in their own power, none the wiser to the shift that had taken place in the forest just beyond their reach. Lily slipped through the side door of the house, her steps light and silent. She had become an expert at moving unnoticed, a skill honed by years of being invisible within her own home. She could hear the clink of glasses and snippets of conversation as she passed by the ballroom. No one spared her a glance as she darted through the hallway, intent on reaching the quiet sanctuary of her room. But just as she reached the staircase, a familiar voice stopped her cold. “Lily.” The tone was soft, but the undercurrent of venom was unmistakable. Lily’s hand froze on the banister, her breath catching in her throat as she turned slowly to face her stepmother. Marissa stood in the doorway of the drawing room, her figure illuminated by the soft glow of candlelight. Dressed in a deep emerald gown that clung to her every curve, she exuded an air of regal authority, her golden hair swept up into an elegant twist. Her beauty was undeniable, but there was something cold and calculating in her gaze, something predatory. Lily’s heart pounded in her chest, but she forced herself to stand tall. “Marissa.” The older woman’s smile was slow, like a cat savouring a cornered mouse. “I’m surprised you came back. I thought after tonight’s little… display, you’d have run off with your tail between your legs.” Lily’s stomach twisted at the mention of Eric’s rejection, but she refused to let Marissa see her pain. She squared her shoulders, her voice calm. “I don’t run.” Marissa’s smile faltered for a moment, her eyes narrowing as if she sensed something different about Lily. Something that hadn’t been there before. “Oh? Bold words for a girl who was just humiliated in front of the entire pack.” Marissa took a slow step forward, her heels clicking softly on the marble floor. “Eric’s rejection was… unfortunate, but not surprising. After all, you’re hardly fit to be a Luna, are you?” Lily’s heart burned with anger, but she kept her expression neutral. Marissa had always thrived on her ability to cut Lily down, to remind her of her supposed inferiority at every turn. But tonight, something had changed. The stone in her pocket thrummed with power, reminding her that she was more than Marissa could ever understand. “I’m not what you think I am,” Lily said quietly, her voice steady. “You don’t know me.” Marissa raised an eyebrow, a cruel smile curving her lips. “Oh, don’t I? You’re the weak little girl who can’t even shift the embarrassment to your father’s legacy. I know exactly who you are.” Lily’s grip tightened on the banister, but before she could respond, another voice interrupted. “She is far more than you could ever comprehend, Marissa.” Lily turned sharply, her heart skipping a beat as an unfamiliar figure stepped out of the shadows at the end of the hallway. The woman was tall, her long, dark hair cascading down her back like a waterfall of midnight silk. Her skin was pale, almost luminescent in the dim light, and her eyes… they glowed with a faint silver hue, like the light of the moon itself. Marissa’s expression faltered, her eyes widening with a flicker of fear. “Who are you?” The woman’s gaze never wavered from Marissa, her presence radiating power and authority. “Someone who is tired of watching you manipulate and destroy lives that are far more important than your own.” Lily’s pulse quickened. Whoever this woman was, she wasn’t someone to be trifled with. There was an aura of ancient magic around her, something primal and untamed. Marissa’s confident demeanour cracked. “This is my home,” she hissed, though her voice lacked its usual conviction. “You have no right...” The woman raised a hand, silencing her with a single gesture. “Your time here is over, Marissa. The moon has chosen. And you are not part of what’s to come.” Without another word, Marissa turned on her heel and stormed down the hall, her gown trailing behind her like a serpent’s tail. The air felt lighter as she disappeared from sight, leaving Lily alone with the mysterious woman. Lily blinked, her mind racing. “Who are you?” The woman’s silver eyes softened as she turned to face Lily, her gaze assessing. “I am Esme,” she said softly, her voice carrying a musical quality that seemed to soothe the tension in the air. “And I’ve been watching you for some time, Lily. You are far more powerful than you realize.” Lily swallowed, her heart racing. “Watching me? Why?” Esme stepped closer, her eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. “Because you are special. You come from a long line of powerful wolves, Lily. Your mother… she was one of the greatest Lunas this pack has ever known. And you—” She paused, her gaze flickering to Lily’s pocket, where the moonstone lay. “You have inherited her power. But it has been dormant, locked away, until now.” Lily’s breath caught in her throat. “My mother…?” Esme nodded, her expression gentle. “She was destined for greatness, just as you are. But someone—Marissa—made sure that greatness was never realized.” A wave of cold anger surged through Lily at the mention of her stepmother. “She killed my mother, didn’t she?” Esme’s eyes darkened, a flicker of sorrow crossing her face. “Yes. Your mother’s death was no accident. Marissa wanted power, and she knew that as long as your mother lived, she could never have it.” Lily’s heart ached with the weight of the revelation, but alongside the pain came a fierce determination. She had always known, deep down, that Marissa was responsible. Now, she had confirmation. And she wasn’t going to let her mother’s death go unavenged. “What do I do?” Lily asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and resolve. “How do I… how do I become what I’m supposed to be?” Esme smiled, a warm, reassuring expression. “You will need to train to learn how to harness the power within you. It won’t be easy, but I will guide you. You have the strength, Lily. You just need to believe in it.” Lily’s heart pounded in her chest, a mix of excitement and apprehension swirling within her. She had spent her entire life feeling powerless, trapped under the weight of her stepmother’s cruelty and the pack’s judgment. But now, with Esme’s guidance and the moonstone’s power, she could finally see a path forward. A path to power. A path to freedom. And, perhaps most importantly, a path to vengeance. Esme held out her hand, her eyes glowing softly in the dim light. “Are you ready to begin?” Lily hesitated for only a moment before she reached out and took Esme’s hand, a spark of energy passing between them. “Yes,” she whispered, her voice filled with a newfound strength. “I’m ready.” As Esme led her away from the estate and deeper into the forest, Lily couldn’t help but feel a surge of hope rising within her. She didn’t know what the future held, but one thing was certain: She was no longer the weak girl the pack had dismissed. She was something far more dangerous. And soon, they would all know it.
