Sunk in Rejection

ASHER’S POV Mark is in front of his desk. Dante soon comes over, leaving me alone at the door. That traitor! I shut the door behind me. "When I allowed you to go near the boundary with your friend, I didn’t expect you both to disappear. I was worried about you, Asher" MK says, using my first name, which isn’t good. He usually calls me by my nickname in the pack house. He goes on, "Asher, you are my Beta, and when my Beta doesn’t come back to the pack house before midnight, I get worried." "I know," is all I can think to say. "So, can you tell me what happened?" he asks while Dante listens quietly. "Kay happened," I reply. "Kay?" MK asks, looking confused. Dante looks confused too. It’s not that they don’t know Kay; they’re just surprised his name came up so suddenly. They both know Kay is a rogue who once tried to forcefully mate with Sandra. "What do you mean?" MK asks. I begin to tell them everything. I leave out the part about the Alpha of our neighboring pack being my mate for now. "Asher, if you weren't the Beta of this pack, they would have harmed you the moment you entered their land," MK says. "They could have hurt a non-rank holding werewolf without a second thought." "I know," I reply, lowering my head. "But I was just trying to save my friend." "You could have come to me, and we could have gone there to save Sandra," MK explains to me. "It would have been too late if I had come to you for help." That’s all I say. MK stays quiet for a bit. He sighs and says to me, "You were doing what you thought was right." I give a small nod. Then there’s complete silence in the study. "So, are you saying that Kay was part of the Sunrise Ark Pack and their Alpha kicked him out?" Dante, who has been quiet since we entered the study, asks, breaking the silence. "Yes," I reply. "He must have tried to forcefully mate with someone in their pack. That’s probably why he was banished," MK suggests. "Maybe," I say with a shrug. "Kay is not mentally stable. He needs to be taken to a hospital," Dante says seriously. MK and I completely agree. "Next time, be careful, Ash," MK tells me. "MK, you know I would have fought Kay if that jerk hadn’t attacked me from behind," I respond, feeling defensive. I don’t like being called "careless." It’s one of the words that other men who want the Beta position use to suggest that a she-wolf doesn’t deserve to be the Beta of this pack. They are eagerly after my role. That’s why I didn’t want to talk to MK near the boundary where other men could hear us. "I know," MK replies. "It’s really late now. Let’s call it a night." Dante yawns just then, "Yeah, I’m tired." We say our "good-nights" and head to our own rooms. When I lie down on my bed and shut my eyes, the icy blue eyes of the Alpha linger in my mind. I was awake before sunrise. I couldn’t sleep well. All night, I kept tossing and turning in bed, thinking about the Alpha and his icy blue eyes. How can someone be so cold? How can someone be so emotionless toward his mate? His passionless face from last night is making me question if he is truly my mate at all. My mind tells me that he might not be my mate because he didn’t hug or kiss me. He didn’t even stop me from returning to my pack! A werewolf who has just discovered his mate would never act like that! A werewolf who has just found his mate would always want her in his view! Sadly, that wasn’t true for me. The Alpha, my mate, didn’t even glance my way when I was leaving his territory! I’m absolutely certain that he’s my mate. When I looked into his eyes last night, I saw his wolf calling to my wolf. And I know that seeing his wolf in his eyes wasn’t just my imagination. I suddenly sit up on my bed. I can’t believe I’m fixating on the Alpha whose name I don’t even know! You might think I’m being careless for that, but I’m not. There are many werewolf packs in the world, and remembering the names of all the Alphas, Betas, and Gammas is a tough job. Plus, our pack, The Blue Moon, never interacted with the Sunrise Ark Pack. They aren’t a friendly pack, that’s what I’ve heard. MK has only met their Alpha once, and he told me that their Alpha truly lives up to his title. Shaking my head, I tell myself to stop thinking about the Alpha. I push myself to get out of bed. After last night, my body feels so tired. I didn’t even fight with anyone, yet I’m worn out. Maybe my lack of sleep is why I feel this way. I go into my bathroom, take a shower, and brush my teeth. When I put on a simple t-shirt and shorts, my stomach starts growling. I feel exhausted and have no energy left, plus I’m hungry. What could be worse? Oh right. When your mate doesn’t show even a tiny bit of feeling when he sees you. I have a feeling I’m going to be grumpy all day. I hope I’m wrong. I walk to the kitchen. There’s a marble counter in the middle. On the counter, there are apples and other fruits in a basket. I take a stool and sit down to grab the apples. As I reach for the first apple, Dante walks into the kitchen. "Good morning," he says as he goes straight to the refrigerator and opens it. "It wasn’t a good morning for me," I reply as I take a bite. Dante closes the refrigerator door, and I see the orange juice container in his grip. It’s his routine to drink juice each day. He picks a glass from the cupboard and pours the orange juice into it while I munch on my apple. He brings over a stool and sits next to me. When he glances at me, he sees the dark shadows under my eyes. "You didn’t rest well last night?" he asks. "Yeah," I respond and keep eating the apples. I don’t keep track of how many I’ve had. I’m just too hungry to care. Just as I’m about to take a bite of another apple, I feel Dante’ gaze on me. I look at him. "What?" I ask, seeing the amused look on his face. "I’m just curious how so many apples can fit in that tiny stomach of yours." I shrug and say, "I’m just really hungry." "You should look at yourself. You’re eating like a pig," he jokes, and I shove him playfully. "I am not!" I defend myself. "Good morning!" MK greets us both as he walks into the kitchen. "Good morning!" Dante responds with the same cheerful tone. "Morning," I say. MK looks at me and asks, "You didn’t sleep last night?" Are my dark circles really that noticeable? "Something like that," he reply. He grabs his stool and sits next to me. "Is it because of what happened last night?" he asks. "You could say that," I answer. He thinks I didn’t sleep due to Kay taking my friend. What he doesn’t realize is that my sleeplessness has nothing to do with Kay. It’s because of that Alpha whose name I don’t know. "MK," I say, looking at him. "What’s the name of the Alpha of the Sunrise Ark Pack?"
