Two weeks after Marcus's arrest, the detective called Emma back to the station. "We've discovered something," the detective said. "Something that changes the nature of this case." Emma met with the detective in the same interrogation room. "Marcus wasn't working alone," the detective said. "We've traced the embezzled funds to multiple accounts. Multiple people were involved." Emma felt her chest tighten. "Who?" she asked. "That's what we're trying to determine," the detective said. "But the money trail leads to someone inside your organization. Someone with significant access. Someone trusted." Emma thought through the staff. Dr. Chen. The accountant. The administrative coordinator. The counselors. All of them were people she'd vetted carefully. All of them had seemed trustworthy.
