CHAPTER EIGHTEEN Words I Couldn't Say The morning after their meeting at the restaurant, Amara woke up with a strange feeling. Not happiness exactly. Not relief. Something quieter. Hope. She reached for her phone. There was a message from Daniel. Daniel: Good morning. She smiled. Amara: Good morning. A few seconds passed. Daniel: I hope you slept well. Amara: I did. She waited. No other message came. She understood. Daniel was giving her room. Again. She put the phone down. Then she saw the notebook on her desk. The one she had bought for herself. She opened it. For months, she had used it to write ideas for work. Today, she wrote something different. Things I never said to Daniel. She stared at the blank page. Then began. I was afraid of loving you. She stopped. Then continued. Not because you gave me a reason to fear you. Because someone else did. She paused. I kept expecting you to become the person who hurt me. Her eyes filled with tears. You never did. She continued writing. She wrote about the first night. The wrong table. The coffee. The rain. The birthday. The jealousy. The conversations. The silence. She wrote about how Daniel had never demanded trust. He had earned it. Slowly. Patiently. She wrote until her hand hurt. Then she closed the notebook. Daniel was doing the same thing. He sat in his apartment with his own notebook open. He had started writing the night Amara asked for space. He had written and rewritten the same letter several times. Today, he finally finished it. He didn't know whether he would give it to her. But he needed the words to exist. Amara, I don't know if I'm good at saying everything I feel. I've spent most of my life believing that keeping things inside made them easier. It doesn't. When I met you at that restaurant, I wasn't looking for anything. You weren't either. We were both supposed to meet someone else. Instead, we met each other. I still think that's one of the strangest things that has ever happened to me. Daniel paused. Then continued. I know I can't promise that I will never make a mistake. I know I can't promise that life will always be easy. But I can promise that I will tell you the truth. I can promise that I will listen. I can promise that when you're afraid, I won't make you feel foolish for being afraid. And I can promise that I will never ask you to forget what happened to you just because I want you to trust me. He looked at the page. Then wrote: I love you. He stopped. Those three words felt heavier than everything else. But they were true. I love you. Not because you're perfect. Not because you're easy to understand. I love you because you're you. The woman who argues with me about coffee. The woman who pretends not to care when she cares too much. The woman who works harder than anyone I know. The woman who makes ordinary days feel important. The woman I met because we were both sitting at the wrong table. He smiled. Then finished the letter. I don't know what happens next. But if you want to find out, I'd like to find out with you. No pressure. No promises about forever. Just honesty. One day at a time. Daniel. He folded the letter. For several minutes, he simply held it. Then he decided. He would give it to her. That evening, Daniel went to Amara's apartment. When she opened the door, she looked surprised. “Hi.” “Hi.” He held out the envelope. “What is this?” “Something I couldn't say properly.” She accepted it. “Do I read it now?” “You can.” Amara opened the envelope. She read silently. Daniel watched her expression change. When she finished, she looked up. “You wrote all this?” “Yes.” She wiped her eyes. “You really love me.” “I do.” She smiled through her tears. “I love you too.” Daniel's breath caught. Amara looked at him. “I've been so scared of saying it.” “You don't have to be scared anymore.” “I think I will be sometimes.” He smiled. “Then we'll deal with it.” She nodded. There was no dramatic promise. No perfect ending. Just two people standing in a doorway, finally saying the things they had been afraid to say. And somehow, that was enough.
