AUSTIN'S POV 'YOU COULDN'T EVEN call me back!' Kana shrieked so loud I had to take the phone off my ear. Sighing, I waited a second before placing it back. 'You already said we were over,' I said blankly to the phone, resisting the urge to break the pen in my hand. 'Why should I call you back?' 'Did you even love me?' She cried hysterically. 'We shouldn't be having this conversation, babe. I'm really busy now.' That was a lie. Not like she needed to know though. I heard a crash and then a low curse escaped her mouth before she hung up. Well, goodbye to you too. I tossed my phone across my bed. She really didn't know when to give up. Dating Kana had been fun, I'd admit. In the society of a high school such as ours, standing out relationships gave one some kind of leverage in school. Kana was a popular cheerleader and I, well, I dated her to enhance my appearance in school. Having a reputation as the school's hottest and coolest boy was something I enjoyed and so having a girlfriend was a reward to come along with it. But now, Kana was gone and I needed another girlfriend. If I knew Kana well enough, word would spread quickly about our recent split up, and that would put me in a bad spotlight with at least half of the school's population unless I found a replacement that would overshadow even Kana. Taking off my ear-pods, I stared at the ceiling, as I tried to think of a way out of my issue. Then I remembered something. I reached for my drawer and pulled out a dark blue floral diary. Earlier when Lay's sister had bumped into Ethan, she had left behind this book. I had been surprised to find out that she was Cupid, the stupid love doctor the whole school idolized. For someone who dressed and sometimes behaved like a guy, she sure had a weird hobby. I opened the first page and cringed at the words she wrote. Cute? Adorable? I wish them the best. Love is so blah blah blah… A shiver ran down me as I imagined her writing these words down. I wondered if Lay knew about this. A small smile broke out on my lips as a crazed idea came to my mind. There might actually be a way out of my predicament after all. A low knock sounded on my door and I quickly hid the diary back into my locker. 'Can I come in?' Mom's head popped through inside my room. Then she walked in. 'Still awake?' 'Homework,' I lied. Mom gave me a knowing smile and I knew she had caught up to my lie. Like she always did. I decided to change the topic. 'Why are you still awake? Don't you have shifts tomorrow?' 'Yeah,' she sighed, running a hand through her dark hair. 'Just came to check on you before I went to bed.' Mom was tired. The bags under her eyes were getting worse day by day. I stood up from my chair and approached her, enveloping her into a gentle hug. 'Mom, you don't have to do this every night. I'm fine.' I assured her. She stared at me before giving me another smile. Stepping back, she pulled me down till I was face to face with her and then placed a kiss on my forehead. 'I know you are.' As she turned to leave, I whispered a goodnight to her, although I doubt she could hear me. Second to having a reputation in school, winning the competition money was another thing I had in mind. After my dad died and left us with a bill of debts, mom had to run two jobs to support us which was why I needed the money. Once I had that, I could finally pay off the debts and give mom the life she truly deserved. ELENA'S POV If I thought yesterday's events; mom wanting to plan my birthday party, forgetting my English essay and running into Austin not once but thrice was a bad thing, this morning was the worst. And as I sprinted down the school's hallway, hoping to make it in time before Miss Campbell got to class, I mentally cursed. To think I had misplaced my journal! Imagine me searching for it like a mad cavewoman this morning only to discover it wasn't anywhere in my room. MIA it was! Not only that, since I was already too late, I wasn't able to get my essay from the library. Just great! After a few halls, corners and stairways, I finally made it to my first period class. I opened the door without hesitation thinking I would be met with Miss Campbell's disappointed looks and Maria's worried one. However, I was met with something totally different. I would rather walk into a class filled with preppy, cheerful and yelling nursery children than this one. 'Pierce? In my class? That's a surprise.' The mocking voice I knew belonged to Mr. Keith came and even though I wasn't looking at him, I could tell he was grinning. 'I understand your haste, but skipping a year isn't really a good idea.' 'It's not like that!' I blurted out, finally looking at him. 'I wasn't-' the snickers in the classroom made me bite down my words. I turned to scan the room and my eyes landed on a certain individual and one of his friends. How come they were the only ones in this class? The class was a newly renovated one. With new chairs and desks, a standing AC and a well equipped board. Despite that, it only had six occupants in it. 'Oh, it's Elena from yesterday.' Ethan waved, giving a distinctive smile. I didn't know how to feel that he remembered my name. Mr. Keith sighed loudly as though he had the world's burden on him. 'If you don't mind Pierce, I'd like to get back to my class.' With that said, I turned to leave when my eyes locked with hues of obsidian ones. The owner's mouth opened, a smile dancing on his lips as he whispered a single word that later made me pause only after I had left the classroom. Cupid. I literally forgot how to breathe.
