Chapter FourteenWe walked a little way down the mountain so we were not silhouetted against the sky, and sat to watch the settlement and gain some idea of whether they were likely to welcome us, kill us, or capture us on behalf of the Hobart police. It was essential that we monitor the huts closely for any sign of life … but I knew mine weren’t the only eyes to drift constantly to the sparkling water beyond. After an eternity had passed with no sign of life whatsoever, we decided to let one person investigate. If there was trouble, the others would come to our aid.
