Chapter Twenty-FourTaking a deep breath, I turned to face the line of police standing between me and the Parliament building. I couldn’t help looking right at Officer Dry, that slope-shouldered grey-eyed ne’er-do-well disguised as a force of justice. Luckily for me, he was facing the other way—but Officer Franklin was looking right at me. His eyes widened and he stiffened like a hound on the hunt. He grabbed Dry’s shoulder, turning him around to see me. All my joints turned to water in an instant. I was lost, and I hadn’t even begun the final race. It was all for nothing, after all. It turned my stomach, but I walked forward. My own limbs carried me, when my courage failed. Then I caught up to my feet and started to run. I ran like I’d never run before. I ran for life and death and hope
