The day dragged interminably. They talked sporadically, both unsure of each other, and tentative with this new alliance. They found common ground in their love of horses, though much of Kai’s knowledge was book born as he had been allowed only supervised interaction with the animals during riding lessons. And then, they got into somewhat heated discussions about tactics and past battles, once again Nikolaus with practical experience, and Kai with analytical knowledge of the past.
