The moment I learned I was carrying Jason and Cassy’s child, my world stopped.
I wanted to scream, to tear the life out of me, but the doctor’s words echoed in my head:
“It’s too late. Removing it could destroy your womb.”
I sank into the chair, trembling. “What… what am I going to do?” I whispered.
A selfish thought crept in. Maybe this was my chance to prove my love. If I carried his child, maybe he would finally love me back. I clung to that foolish hope, convincing myself the pain would be worth it.
Later that evening, Jason called.
His voice, once soft and tender, now sent shivers down my spine.
“Please,” he begged. “Don’t get rid of the baby. Only your blood type can save it.”
Without thinking, I agreed. Deep down, I knew I was digging my own grave, but the thought of losing him hurt more than any consequence.
“Then you’ll have to move into my apartment,” he added. “Where you live isn’t suitable for a baby.”
“Yes,” I breathed, hope lighting my chest. “I’ll move in.”
For the first time in months, I smiled. Maybe, just maybe, God was finally on my side.
---
The long-awaited day arrived. Jason had promised to pick me up, but disappointment washed over me when his driver appeared instead. Maybe he was busy, I told myself.
Stepping into his house, memories of when he once loved me flooded back. What had changed? I wondered. Maybe keeping this baby would help me reclaim a place in his heart.
“The b***h is back,” a familiar voice sneered. “I thought you were dead.”
I turned. My mother.
“Mother…” I whispered, dropping to my knees. “I’m sorry. I didn’t plan to carry Jason’s child. It was a coincidence.”
“You’re sorry?” she spat. “You selfish, bad-luck girl! Just one thing your sister wanted, and you couldn’t give it to her? You’ve brought me nothing but pain!”
Her words cut deep. Since my father died in a car crash on my twelfth birthday, she had never stopped calling me cursed. Maybe she was right. Maybe I was the curse she said I was. I deserved every ounce of life’s cruelty.
A servant led me to my room. It was dusty and cold, but better than where I had lived before. I told myself it didn’t matter; as long as I got to see Jason every day, I could endure anything.
Soon after, the servant returned.
“Mr. Jason wants to see you,” she said.
Joy shot through me. Without thinking, I rushed out.
Jason’s expression changed the moment I entered.
“Sit,” he said, his voice sharp, cold, and distant, nothing like the gentle tone from the phone.
“You devil! You did this on purpose!” Cassy hissed.
“No, I wasn’t aware,” I said quietly.
“You weren’t aware? Don’t think you’ve won. After having the baby, you’ll leave!” she shouted.
I searched Jason’s eyes, hoping for defense, for anything. But he stayed silent.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I promise I won’t get in your way.”
“So this b***h is holding my baby now?” Cassy screamed.
Before I could react, she dragged me to the floor and kicked my stomach violently. Pain tore through me, sharp and merciless. I looked at Jason, praying he would stop her, but he just sat there watching as if he were enjoying it.
I glanced around desperately for Isabella, but my strength was fading fast.
The kicks didn’t stop. They came harder and faster.
I tried to grab Cassy’s leg to push her off, and she stumbled, falling close to Jason.
Isabella rushed forward, pushing me back.
“Do you want to kill her? She isn’t strong enough after her surgery!” she yelled.
Jason stood, his eyes unreadable. He walked up to me and struck me hard across the face.
“Don’t overplay your role,” he said flatly. Then he kicked my side. My body went weak.
Cassy came at me again, dragging me across the floor until my vision blurred. Everything went black.
---
When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed. Jason and Cassy were standing in the doorway. Jason’s only question was for the doctor:
“Is the baby okay?”
He didn’t look at me.
The doctor’s face tightened. “I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “The fetus didn’t survive.”
The words hit like a blade to the chest.
Before I could process them, Cassy lunged forward, shaking my weak body.
“You evil soul! You killed my baby!” she screamed.
Jason pulled her into his arms. “Don’t worry,” he said coldly. “Once she recovers, we’ll do another implantation.”
Another implantation. Cruel. Heartless. Unreal.
A bitter laugh escaped my lips. My voice trembled as I pushed myself upright.
“I loved you, Jason,” I said, each word breaking inside me. “I gave you everything, and this is how you repay me?”
I looked at Cassy. “You rejected him because he was poor. Mother forced me to marry him, and now that he’s rich, you come back?”
I turned to my mother. “You never treated me like a daughter.”
Something inside me hardened. My voice turned co
ld. “You’ll all pay for this.”
Finally, my gaze found Jason’s. “And you… I curse the day I met you.”
