Chapter 13: Siege

405 Words
Dawn broke red. It wasn’t metaphorical—the sky was stained with ash as fires burned at the edge of the district. Aziel's army had already reached the outer blocks, and they weren’t hiding anymore. Smoke grenades. Armored vans. Drone footage posted to the darknet with titles like “Blood for Smoke.” Adam, Koji, and a small militia of local fighters took position across rooftops. The neighborhood had been evacuated by dusk the previous day. Only those willing to fight remained. Cesar was one of them. Adam: "You should’ve gone." Cesar: "So should you. But we’re here." Sarah remained in the basement shelter. The walls were lined with blankets and supplies. She wrapped Cesar’s journal in cloth and placed it beside a first-aid kit. Just in case. Koji barked over the comm: Koji (radio): "Eyes on convoy. Ten vehicles. Two lead trucks armed." Adam: "Engage only when they breach the first perimeter. We hold ground." The first shots rang out an hour later. Muffled thuds and the sharp c***k of return fire. Adam fired cleanly, methodically. Cesar manned the second-floor window, taking out targets with surprising accuracy. He had become more than a boy. He was steel now. Aziel appeared like a phantom. Tall, cloaked in gray, his face painted with ash and symbols. He stood at the center of the chaos, untouched. Aziel (shouting): "You think you've won? My brother was the shadow. I am the flame!" Adam: "Then come burn." They fought their way toward one another like planets on a collision course. Koji was shot in the leg, bleeding out beside the alley wall. Cesar carried him into cover. Koji (weakly): "Don’t let him break the house. Not again." Aziel and Adam met in the courtyard, the ruins of the community gym smoldering behind them. No words now. Just fists. Guns empty. Blow after blow. Aziel was brutal—each strike a hammer. Adam was surgical—sharp, clean, desperate. But he was tired. Aziel grabbed him by the throat. Aziel: "You think this ends with me? This world is ours now." Adam (gasping): "Then I’ll take you with me." He pulled the detonator from his belt. But Cesar shouted. Cesar: "NO!" He tackled Aziel from behind. Gunfire erupted again. Another wave of Smoke soldiers stormed the block. Cesar and Adam crawled behind rubble, choking on the ash. Adam: "He’s not dead..." Cesar: "We hold. That’s what you said. We hold."
